France: Reigning champs

France will begin their World Cup title defense with a matchup against intercontinental qualifiers Australia in Qatar. No national team has won back-to-back world cups since Brazil did it 70 years ago but France definitely has the squad to achieve this feat. Despite their lack of good performances this year, they have the strongest squad in the world.

Though key injuries have forced Didier Deschamps to reshuffle his plans, Les Bleus have plenty of aces up their sleeve and are set to unleash Kylian Mbappe on World Cup defenses. With key contributions in France’s run to Nations League glory last year and a red-hot start to this season with Paris Saint-Germain, we will definitely include him in our soccer picks and parlays.

Off-the-field scandals and countless injury problems have plagued this France side, who already hold the unwanted honor of being the worst-performing defending champions at a World Cup after going out in the group stage in 2002 without a single win to their name. Real Madrid’s ace Karim Benzema picked up an injury during the latest training session and will he miss the entire World Cup.

Deschamps has yet to name a replacement for the Ballon d’Or winner. He has until Monday to do so, but he has also been forced to swap Presnel Kimpembe and Christopher Nkunku out for Axel Disasi and Randal Kolo Muani respectively.

Australia: Outsiders

A round-of-16 berth in the 2006 tournament represents the Socceroos’ best achievement on the biggest global stage so far, and while they flattered to deceive during AFC qualifying, Arnold’s men head into their opening match on the back of five successive victories.

Australia had the most difficult qualifications of all the teams in the world, the team had to go through a total of 20 games to get to the tournament, and they succeeded. As well as having one of the weaker squads in the tournament, Graham Arnold’s side has many key players under injury clouds. Starting center-back pairing Kye Rowles and Harry Souttar, as well as attacking players Martin Boyle and Ajdin Hrustic, have all missed large chunks of the season.

Australia has not won a World Cup game since 2010, and have two wins in their last 13 World Cup games. The Socceroos have not scored a non-penalty World Cup goal since Tim Cahill in 2014, so if you’re betting online, just fade them in each match.

France vs Australia Picks & Prediction

ML: Deschamps’ men are seen as heavy favorites to win Tuesday’s clash being priced at -350 on the three-way money line according to the latest soccer odds while Australia is priced at +1000. Kylian Mbappe will make life difficult for the opposition’s back-line and despite having so many injury issues France should easily win this fixture because the difference in quality between the two sides is huge.

ATS: The Australians are likely to adopt a defense-minded approach in the Group D opener, but preventing France’s attackers from scoring is easier said than done. France hasn’t been in the best form of late despite beating Austria 2-0 in September but Australia isn’t used to playing against this level of opposition and even failed to score in recent international matches against New Zealand and Saudi Arabia. France will enter this clash all guns blazing and they have the necessary weapons to cover the -1½, priced at -115.

Totals: The goal line is set at 2½ with the over being priced at -130. This clash has all the ingredients to be a high-scoring affair. France’s pace and creativity in the final third are top-notch. They are amazing going forward and we expect them to cover the goal line on their own. Australia might also score because they are great on-set pieces.
