Germany: World-Class Squad

Hansi Flick’s side takes on Japan in Al Rayyan just a few hours before group rivals Spain and Costa Rica face off in Al Khor. Germany is the second-most successful side in World Cup history after Brazil, but they have won just one title since 1990, thanks to Mario Gotze’s winner against Argentina in 2014.

Die Mannschaft held the honor of being the first team to qualify for the World Cup finals, with the exception of host nation Qatar. Flick has at his disposal plenty of talented players and he also sprung a few wild cards into an exciting squad. For example, he included the likes of Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Youssoufa Moukoko and recalled Mario Gotze. The core of the team is formed by Bayern Munich players and we expect many of them to start against Japan.

Flick is considering starting with all seven Bayern players at the World Cup. The coach is aware of the importance of the Bayern block with already existing automatisms. They are expected to drive on into the knockout stages in Qatar in the coming weeks and Flick will want to start on a positive note against Japan.

Since the start of summer, Germany have won twice from seven games and avoided Nations League relegation thanks to a win over Italy and a superb 3-3 draw against England at Wembley Stadium. They are one of the World Cup favorites and, given their world-class squad, we will include them in our soccer picks and parlays.

Japan: Rock-Solid Defense

Japan have made a habit of going out in the group stage before reaching the last 16 of the World Cup in their six tournaments since 1998, but qualifying with 15 wins from 18 fixtures and a record of 58 goals scored in the process is certainly a good indication of this team’s quality.

Hajime Moriyasu received plenty of criticism from Celtic fans for omitting Kyoko Furuhashi and Reo Hatate, who has probably been the best player in Scotland this season. Moriyasu is all about not conceding goals and being very organized at the back. Japan have a great generation of young players that will be motivated to shine and potentially get spotted for a big transfer.

Moriyasu has some eye-catching talent in his squad, including Kaoru Mitoma and Takefusa Kubo leading his attack. He will look to balance his young stars with great experience in defense and Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu looks set to switch to center-back. They are a tough nut to crack but if you’re betting online, you can’t oppose Germany here.

Germany vs Japan Picks & Prediction

  • Worth Betting on the Moneyline?

A win for Germany will place even more importance on their second group-stage clash against Spain, with the pair tipped to battle it out for the top spot in Group E. They enter this clash as heavy favorites being priced at -215 on the three-way Moneyline according to the latest soccer odds. Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane will form the offensive three, with Kai Havertz leading the attacking line as the sole striker. Germany’s pace is outstanding and Bayern Munich’s core should make the difference here. We expect an easy win from Germany but backing them on the ML has no value.

  • Worth Betting Against the Spread?

Flick has done a brilliant job with his squad ahead of the World Cup. He has lost only once in 15 games, won nine and drawn five times. It’s a squad that is very much Flick’s and there is plenty of excitement that this German team is going to be easy on the eye and is full of attacking intent. They are scoring goals for fun and should easily cover the -1 spread priced at -135.

  • Worth Betting the Totals?

We expect at least three goals in this match but the over 2½ is priced at -145 and has no value for our betting needs. Germany are notoriously ruthless in World Cup competitions and we think they’ll get off to a perfect start in Qatar.

SCORE PREDICTION: Germany 3, Japan 1
