  • Apart from a 0-0 draw at Athletic Club on March 3, Barcelona have won each of their last nine matches against teams outside of La Liga’s top three.

  • Almería have conceded 2+ goals in five of their last six matches.

Can Barcelona Secure a Top-Two Finish?

Since Pep Guardiola took charge of the club in the summer of 2008, Barcelona have finished outside of the top two just once, when they placed third in 2020-21 under Ronald Koeman. After falling to a 4-2 defeat to Girona, Barça looked in danger of relinquishing their top-two status, but they would bounce back the following week. Girona relinquished the lead on two separate occasions, with Jon Guridi equalizing in the 99th minute for Alaves, whilst Barcelona capitalized three days later and took care of business with a 2-0 win against Real Sociedad.

With Real Madrid winning the league title and Athletic Club and Mallorca participating in the Copa del Rey Final, only one spot remains for next season’s SuperCup in Saudi Arabia. In order to book their ticket and secure much-needed finances for the upcoming transfer window, Barcelona need to finish second in La Liga.

They currently find themselves one point above Girona and six above Atlético Madrid with just three matches remaining. The momentum has swung back in their favor, and they’ll be looking to preserve second place with a victory against Almería.

After narrowly staving off the drop in their return to La Liga, Almería have endured a torrid campaign and have looked headed for the Segunda from the very start. They were the last remaining winless team in Europe until March 17, and they boast the worst defense in the league with 70 goals conceded in 35 matches.

So far this season, they’ve been caught out and exposed in transition and lacking in organization in the build-up play, but that hasn’t stopped them from being competitive against the top teams in Spain, losing 3-2 to Real Betis, Real Madrid and Barcelona, losing 5-2 to Girona and drawing 2-2 and losing 2-1 to Barcelona.

Almería are playing for nothing more than pride at this moment, and this could enable them to open up and take risks against the Blaugranas as they look to find the back of the net for the sixth match in a row. Whilst Barcelona should be able to come away with a victory in their trip to Andalusia, grabbing a clean sheet could be easier said than done. We’re backing both teams to score in our La Liga predictions.

Best Bet: Barcelona to win and both teams to score
