The Premier League Returns to Action

The league’s biggest stars have been competing in the Middle East and grounds up and down the country have been silent since the final matches on November 13. Many clubs have headed off for warm-weather training camps to recuperate from the grueling fixture list before the break and to ensure they stay sharp ahead of the league’s return.

The Premier League will return to action on December 26 for Boxing Day, which is eight days after Argentina beat France in the final on December 18. Seven games will be held, including Aston Villa vs. Liverpool and Arsenal vs. West Ham.

Two games, Chelsea vs. Bournemouth and Manchester United vs. Nottingham Forest, will take place on December 27. The final game of that round, Manchester City’s trip to Elland Road to face Leeds, will be held on December 28.

The traditional set of games between Boxing Day and the New Year has been scrapped, which means that the next round of matches will be between December 30 and January 1. The final set of fixtures in the post-Christmas schedule will then be held between January 2 and January 5. Remember to check back because we will be here to share our top soccer picks and parlays.

Premier League standings

Arsenal leads the way at the top of the Premier League coming out of the World Cup break, with Mikel Arteta’s side holding a five-point cushion over reigning champions Manchester City. Newcastle occupies the third spot after an excellent start to the campaign, losing just one of 15 which came at Liverpool, winning eight to amass 30 points.

Antonio Conte’s Spurs sit fourth after an up-and-down season, with Manchester United three points behind them in fifth – but with a game in hand. Liverpool sits sixth and four points behind United, with Brighton and Chelsea one behind the Reds on 21 points.

Injuries Will Affect EPL Giants

Several Premier League players have picked up injuries at the World Cup in Qatar, which could play havoc with managers’ plans heading into the second half of the season.

Arsenal players featured the least at the World Cup. The bad news for the Gunners is that their star player Gabriel Jesus picked up a knee injury and is not expected to play again until February, missing games against Tottenham, Manchester United, and Man City. Takehiro Tomiyasu also suffered a hamstring injury and is a doubt for their Boxing Day clash against West Ham.

Chelsea’s injury list is growing day by day. Armando Broja wasn’t involved in the tournament but suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in a friendly, while captain Cesar Azpilicueta picked up a calf strain in Qatar.

Jurgen Klopp is a happy manager because he will have almost all his players fully fit for the restart. Ibrahima Konate will be offered an extended break, while Virgil Van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also unlikely to play in their EFL Cup tie against Manchester City on Thursday. Darwin Nunez is already back on Merseyside and scored twice in a friendly against AC Milan last Friday. If you’re betting online you should start backing the Reds.

Man City is top of the table when it comes to the most minutes played at the World Cup, which is another reminder of how much quality Pep Guardiola has at his disposal. Julian Alvarez will be rested after Argentina’s campaign and is unlikely to feature again until the New Year. Furthermore, ten other Man City stars reached the quarter-finals in Qatar and are unlikely to play against Liverpool on Thursday. The good news for Guardiola is Erling Haaland wasn’t involved in the World Cup and is fully fit again after a foot injury. He already scored 23 goals this season.

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will probably not be involved in their clash against Brentford on Boxing Day after playing Argentina in the World Cup final. Cristian Romero is also set to miss that game after playing a key role in Argentina’s triumph. Ivan Perisic will also be exhausted after playing in the third-place play-off for Croatia, while Richarlison, Eric Dier, and Harry Kane all reached the quarter-finals.
