Taking the Baton
Checking Denmark’s recent call-ups, Yussuf Poulsen is the team’s top scorer with 11 goals in 68 games. He’s followed by two great, young talents named Kasper Dolberg and Andreas Skov Olsen. Dolberg has scored 10 goals in 35 games, while Olsen has scored seven goals in 21 games. The thing is that Poulsen is 28 years old, while Dolberg and Olsen are 24 and 22.
Neither of them is the Red and Whites’ top player, that title belongs to Christian Eriksen, but if the midfielder wants to lead Denmark to rewrite history by advancing beyond the Quarterfinals, he’s going to need a lot of help.
That’s why we couldn’t decide between Dolberg and Olsen, so let’s get to know a little about both.
Dolberg made his professional debut in 2015 at 18. He ended up playing only three games for Silkeborg IF, a team from the Danish Superliga. He didn’t play more because Ajax knocked on his door and offered him a three-year contract.
He didn’t hesitate and signed with the Dutch powerhouse. In the 2016-17 season, he proved them right by scoring 16 goals in the Eredivisie and another seven in UEFA competitions. Unfortunately for them, he couldn’t keep up the pace.
The following season he only scored nine goals in total. In fact, he wouldn’t score more than 12 again. Therefore, Ajax decided to let him go, which is when he joined Nice from Ligue 1. He has scored 24 goals in 85 games, contributing for Nice to qualify for prestigious competitions such as the Conference League.
Regarding the Red and Whites, Dolberg made his debut in 2016. Less than a year later, he scored his first goal. That was more than enough to be included in the squad for the 2018 World cup odds C in Russia, but he didn’t score.
Things were a bit different in the 2020 EURO, in which he was the team’s top scorer with three goals, helping the Danes to reach the Semis. Unfortunately for them, they collided with England and lost 2-1.
Andreas Skov Olsen
Olsen made his professional debut two years later than Dolberg. He played a couple of years for Nordsjaelland, also a team from the Danish Superliga. He ended up scoring 27 goals in two seasons, more than enough for Bologna, a team from the Italian Serie A, to set eyes on him.
He went to play for the Italian side but didn’t meet expectations. He scored only three goals in 71 games. That’s why the Red and Blues decided to send him to Belgium. Skov now plays for Club Brugge, for which he has scored 10 goals in 21 games. Plus, he already contributed for them winning the Belgian Pro League and Belgian Super Cup.
The 22-year-old made his debut with Denmark’s senior team in 2020, but it was what he did in 2021 that motivated us to include him in this piece. He was crucial for Denmark to win Group F during the UEFA qualifiers. They ended up defeating Scotland and Austria. Olsen finished as the team’s top scorer, alongside Joakim Maehle, with five goals.
Denmark in the 2022 World Cup
Denmark should have no problem advancing to the Round of 16. The Red and Whites are the betting online favorites to finish as the runners-up in Group D behind France. They’re offering a +300 price. Australia and Tunisia complete the group.
Individually, Dolberg and Olsen are among the candidates to win the Golden Boot. No, they aren’t atop the soccer lines as they’re offering a +10000 and +15000 price, but not all teams have two names written on that list. Some don’t even have one. That shows Denmark’s potential for the World cup soccer 2022.
