Argentina was the host of the 1978 WC, which was played with 16 teams. Coached by the legendary Cesar Luis Menotti, La Albiceleste faced Hungary, France, and Italy in Group 1. Back then, winning a game granted two points. They won their first two games, against Hungary and France, 2-1. Later, they faced Italy for the first spot but ended up losing 1-0.
In the second round, they faced Brazil, Poland, and Peru in Group B. They defeated Poland 2-0 and drew 0-0 against Brazil. In the third and final match, they needed to defeat Peru by four goals, minimum, in order to advance to the Grand Finale. They won 6-0 in what many consider a fixed match.
The truth is that La Albiceleste managed to advance and face the Netherlands in the championship game. The game finished 1-1, meaning overtime was needed. Argentina retook the lead in the 105th minute thanks to Kempes; 10 minutes later, Ricardo Bertoni sealed the deal. The Netherlands was the betting online favorite as that was its second straight final, but Argentina ended up winning 3-1.
Individually, Kempes finished as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals. Regarding the team, he was followed by Leopoldo Luque with four.

Best Goal Ever?
In 1982, Diego Maradona was determined to take revenge after being left out from the team that represented Argentina in the 1982 WC. Mexico was the host and unlike the 1978 edition, 24 teams were after the title.
Argentina finished the Group Stage unbeaten after defeating South Korea (3-1) and Bulgaria (2-0). They also drew to Italy (1-1).
They suffered more than expected in the Round of 16 but managed to defeat Uruguay 1-0. Maradona left the best of him for the Quarterfinals match against England. La Albiceleste won 2-1 with two goals scored by Maradona.
First, he scored with his hand. That’s right, he managed to fool the referee, who thought the No. 10 scored with his head. England’s players went nuts, but we’re talking about a time without VAR. That goal is now known as The Hand of God.
Four minutes later, Maradona scored what many consider to be the best goal ever. FIFA named it the Goal of the Century. He basically went all the way across the pitch, leaving behind all the opponents who got in his way, including the goalkeeper, and scored. This time, England’s players had nothing to say except for WOW! They scored with nine minutes left but it was too late.
Argentina defeated Belgium in the Semifinals 2-0 with another brace from Maradona. Later, in the Grand finale against Germany, Maradona didn’t score, but La Albiceleste still won 3-2.
Gary Lineker (England) was the tournament’s top scorer with six goals, followed by Maradona with five. Jorge Valdano was also crucial for Argentina to win its second title as he scored four goals, including one in the championship game.
