The Copa America tournament was supposed to be finishing up this month but like everything else in the world of sports it has been impacted by the COVID pandemic. With club soccer extending through the summer, international competitions were postponed a year so the South American Championship will now take place from June 12 to July 12, 2021
Copa America 2021 Betting Outlook
Format and setup
With 10 teams in South American the CONMEBOL championship always includes two other international teams and for the 2021 event those will be Australia and Qatar, the hosts of the 2022 World Cup.
The tournament will be split between co-hosts Colombia and Argentina with two groups of six. The North Zone includes Brazil (+200), Colombia (+375), Ecuador (+4500), Peru (+2000), Qatar (+7000) and Venezuela (+2500) with all group games in Colombia. The South Zone includes Argentina (+155), Australia (+7000), Bolivia (+12000), Chile (+1200), Paraguay (+2500) and Uruguay (+700) with all games in Argentina.
Lastly the top four from each group advance to the quarterfinals with two games each in Argentina and Colombia. Each country will also host a semifinal game before the final is played July 12, 2021 in Barranquilla, Colombia.
As a co-host, Argentina is the BetUs.com odds-on betting favorite at +155. The 14-time Copa champs have not lifted the Copa America trophy since 1993. This is actually their last major world trophy. Argentina has lost in the Copa America final four times in recent years with losses in 2004, 2007, 2015, and 2016 plus a third-place finish in 2019.
World superstar Lionel Messi will be 34 by time the Copa America kicks off and this may be his last chance to win the trophy. Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Juventus forward Paulo Dybala should be there to help. The biggest question for Lionel Scaloni’s squad is who will bet the keeper.
The Defending Champions
In 2019, Brazil claimed their 19th Copa America title on home soil. That was thanks to a 3-1 win over Peru after dispatching hated rival Argentina 2-0 in the semifinal. The Brazilians have Copa America odds of +200 to win in 2021 and the favorites from the North Zone. Brazil was stunned by Belgium 2-1 in the 2018 World Cup quarterfinals and are looking for an international bounce back.
Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus should help forward Neymar. As well as Chelsea’s Willian and Liverpool’s Fabinho on the attacking side. Captain Dani Alves leads the back with Neymar’s PSG teammate Thiago Silva. The biggest question for manager Tite is undoubtedly which world-class goalie to pick, Man City’s Ederson or Liverpool’s Allison.
Don’t sleep on Colombia. The only time the co-hosts have won the Copa America was in 2001 when they were the lone host.
The Colombians fell in the 2018 World Cup round of 16 in penalty kicks against England and also lost in penalties to Chile in the 2019 Copa America. Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado will be ready to lead the co-hosts with captain David Ospina in goal.
Uruguay is +700 with a powerful attack that includes Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, PSG’s Edinson Cavani, and Valencia’s Maxi Gomez. Uruguay won their group at the 2018 World Cup before losing in the quarters to eventual champion France 2-0.
Chile is battle-tested proven by its 2015 and 2016 Copa America titles. However, their stars are older now and they enter the tournament at +1200. If Alexis Sanchez, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Bravo can find the fountain of youth, Chile can make things difficult in the South Zone for Argentina and Uruguay.
