Serbia: Euro 2024 Darkhorse?

Although the European nation made it to the World Cup four times since 2000 –failing to make it past the group stage on all counts– the two-time runners-up in 1960 and 1968 finished as quarter-finalists at Euro 2000.

Serbia secured their return to the European Championship stage after a two-decade absence with a solid performance in the qualifiers. They finished second in their group, showcasing a potent attack and a developing defensive solidity.

Serbia’s overall numbers show the story of an attacking team. They averaged a healthy 1.88 goals per match in the qualifiers, with a strong passing accuracy of over 85%, suggesting a possession-based approach that creates scoring opportunities.

While Serbia’s attacking talent is undeniable, their journey to the latter stages of Euro 2024 might depend on a more balanced approach. Their defensive record in the qualifiers wasn’t spotless, conceding an average of over one goal per match.

Group C sees Serbia paired with England, Denmark, and Slovenia, a difficult group at face value. Serbia has plenty of talent within their ranks though and positive results against their Danish and Slovenian counterparts could see them qualify for the knockout stages.

An opening match against England could see them start on the back foot but anything other than a loss and Serbia will be looking at qualification at a minimum.

They are second favorites to finish bottom of their group priced at +150 according to the latest soccer odds and huge +550 underdogs in their match against England.

Serbia Primed for Cinderella Story

The Serbian midfield is composed of technically gifted players like Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, known for his long-range passing and ability to control the game’s tempo.

While not as prominent as their attacking talent, Serbia’s defense has shown signs of improvement. Nikola Milenkovic brings composure and experience, while Nemanja Maksimovic provides a strong presence in midfield, helping to win back possession and shield the backline.

Many fans were disappointed to see Aleksandar Mitrovic abandon his cult status at Fulham for the riches of Saudi Arabia this summer. But the move has been resoundingly successful for the 29-year-old.

He has scored 38 goals in 41 appearances for Al-Hilal and looks set to fire his club to the Pro League title. Mitrovic has always delivered for his country too, scoring a remarkable 57 goals in 89 appearances for Serbia.

AC Milan’s Luka Jovic may be the next best bet in attack. Dusan Vlahovic is back after missing the March international break due to injury, while Red Bull Salzburg forward Petar Ratkov has also made a return.

At wing back, Filip Kostic will be expected to dominate the left flank. PAOK’s Andrija Zivkovic will start at right wing-back.

Although aged 35, captain Dusan Tadic remains Serbia’s primary playmaker. The Fenerbahce man should be utilized on the set pieces. He provided the most assists on the team during the qualifiers.

If you’re looking for a great value bet, back them to reach the quarterfinals at +330 odds. Serbia is a great team for goals, so if you like in-play betting you should back them to find the back of the net.

Question Of The Day

Who will score the most goals for Serbia at the Euro 2024?

While official information will not be available until the tournament, Aleksandar Mitrovic is the most likely candidate to find himself in the starting lineup. His composure and experience make him a reliable choice for scoring the most goals for Serbia in this tournament.
