Hungary Fighting to Reclaim Lost Glory at Euro 2024

The Hungary Euro 2024 squad is packed full of talent ready to wreak havoc at the tournament in Germany this summer, with manager Marco Rossi confirming his full 26 on May 14.

Their most notable recent performance was in the 2016 edition, where Hungary reached the round of 16 after topping their group. This achievement marked their best result in almost 40 years. We look at surprising inclusions, standout stars and potential starting lineup to help with your online betting.

Hungary Eyes Runner-Up Spot in Group A

Hungary became the first team at Euro 2024 to announce their final squad, even before any other side had even confirmed a preliminary squad. Rossi has declared five replacement players on standby, however, in case any of his current selections get injured in between now and their opening game on June 15 against Switzerland.

With Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai leading the team from midfield as captain, Hungary have one of the most exciting players at Euro 2024 who isn’t playing for one of the favorites.

There’s great experience in the rest of the Hungary Euro 2024 squad, with the likes of Peter Gulacsi in goal, Willi Orban on defense and Roland Sallai up front all strong options for a reliable side.

Kevin Csoboth is perhaps a surprise inclusion, given that he has not had the best season at Ujpest. He’s scored just seven goals in 35 appearances while exciting attackers like Zalan Vancsa and Krisztian Liztes missed out. Csoboth has also never scored in seven senior caps for the national team.

Rossi tends to set up in a three-at-the-back system with Hungary, with Bendeguz Bolla and Milos Kerkez likely to operate as right and left wing-backs, respectively.

He may revert back to his traditional three-back system against a weaker opponent on paper in Scotland, giving the wing-backs more license to go forward and cause havoc in the final third.

Although Dominic Szoboszlai is the only Hungary player in the market for the Euro 2024 Golden Boot, they’ll be hoping to rely on someone like Barnabas Varga to get goals. The primary striker for Hungary, Varga has scored four goals since making his debut just one year ago, and he’s been thriving domestically.

For Ferencvaros, Varga has scored 29 goals across all competitions in 38 games, including 20 in 23 league matches. Hungary will be wishing he had emerged sooner.

In a group with Germany, Switzerland and Scotland, Hungary are third favorites to win the group priced at +700 according to the latest soccer odds.

Hungary Strengths and Weaknesses

RB Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi will be relishing the opportunity to shine on the European stage this year. The 33-year-old, who is already past 50 national team caps, is undoubtedly Hungary’s first-choice in between the sticks. He is expected to fully recover from his injury before the tournament.

Dominik Szoboszlai will also be Hungary’s main creative player and superstar. Despite still being only 23, Szoboszlai is the Hungary captain and talisman, the player around whom their team will be built. And he’s proven to be a more than capable playmaker for them so far.

During qualifying for Euro 2024 alone, Szoboszlai provided five assists, with only Bruno Fernandes and Kylian Mbappe setting up more across the campaign as a whole. Szoboszlai has been enjoying his time in the Premier League with Liverpool too, creating 54 chances with two assists so far.

Hungary plays an all-out attacking style of football. Two goals per game average and rising confidence among the squad will help them massively. They also have a very good record against Germany in recent times and will fancy their chances to top the group.

In a group with teams such as Germany and Scotland, not the strongest defensively, expect Hungary to do well.

They are not the strongest defensively and their over-reliance on Szoboszlai could become a problem if other teams figure out how to stop him.

With warm-up matches against the Republic of Ireland and Israel scheduled, there’s certainly potential they’ll need to call upon at least one of those waiting in the wings.

Varga looks to be the striker Hungary have been missing for a while, and there is hope that he, alongside Szoboszlai and Sallai, can boost the nation up the rankings and make a run at Euro 2024.

We expect them to score in every game – even against Germany – so if you love your goals you should add Hungary to your soccer picks and parlays.

Questions Of The Day

Apart from Barnabas Varga, who could score at least two goals for Hungary in this group?

A standout betting pick in this group is Dominik Szoboszlai. He’s taking penalties, corners, free kicks and is involved in everything in the attacking third, so if you love your soccer player props you should back him in every game.
