Mexico Leads Copa America Group B, But Who Can Play Spoiler?

For the first time since the 2016 edition, Copa America will involve teams from CONCACAF. Six to be precise, including Mexico, the soccer betting favorites to win Group B. That´s right, El Tri is +110 to overcome Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica. In addition, the team led by Jaime Lozano is also among the top four favorites to win the title. Let´s find out why and which team has the best chances to pull off a stunner in Group B.

  • Defending Champions: Argentina

Mexico Eyes Copa Title in “Home Away From Home”

The 2024 edition of Copa America will be held in the USA, which is like a second home for Mexico´s national team. That´s one of the big reasons why El Tri is favored to win Group B, no other team will play in a better environment than them. The same always happens in the Gold Cup, CONCACAF´s regional tournament, a competition that always takes place in the USA and in which Mexico reached the final in four of the last five editions.

Mexico has a well-balanced roster between the crème de la crème from Liga MX and those who have already made the leap to Europe. Make sure to keep an eye on Edson Alvarez (West Ham) and Santiago Gimenez (Feyenoord), who finished the Eredivisie season with 23 goals. Born in Argentina, he began representing Mexico in 2021 despite some interest from La Albiceleste.

With Javier Hernandez, Carlos Vela, and Hirving Lozano out, Gimenez´s chances of fighting for the Golden Boot increase considerably.

Mexico has never won Copa America, but El Tri finished as the runners-up in 1993 and 2001. That´s something that none of the other three teams has accomplished.

Don’t Sleep on Ecuador & Venezuela!

I have no doubt that Ecuador and Venezuela feel disrespected, especially Ecuador, Mexico´s biggest threat at a +160 betting line. Let´s not forget that Ecuador qualified for four of the last six editions of the World Cup, and CONMEBOL´s qualifiers are much more difficult than CONCACAF´s.

Ecuador´s attacking unit will be led by Enner Valencia, who scored three goals in the 2022 World Cup. The veteran, who plays for Internacional (Brazil), has scored 40 goals for the national team in 83 games. No other player has scored more goals than him.

As for Venezuela, the team will be led by Yangel Herrera, a midfielder who plays for Girona, the team that became a sensation in La Liga by finishing third. There´s also Salomon Rondon, who has scored 41 goals for the national team and currently plays for Pachuca in the Liga MX.

Venezuela is offering a +550 price to win Group B. I´m not saying they should be the favorite, but Venezuela has improved a lot in recent years, enough to be considered a dark horse to win Group B.

Regarding the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Venezuela is fourth, losing only one game. Fernando Batista’s team has already defeated Chile and Paraguay and managed a draw in Brazil.

Group B Bottom Dwellers? Jamaica Priced at +900

I feel kind of bad for Jamaica because the Reggae Boyz have no chance of winning Group B. I don´t even think they have a chance of finishing second. That´s precisely why they´re offering a +900 price in the BetUS sportsbook.

Don´t get me wrong, they can put up a good fight, especially when it comes to physicality, but they aren´t used to facing teams like Ecuador and Venezuela and haven´t beaten Mexico since 2017. Most recently, the two collided in the semifinals of the 2023 Gold Cup and El Tri won 3-0. To give you an even better idea, Jamaica is among the least favorite teams to win the title at +15000.

Jamaica´s only previous appearance in Copa America was in 2016, losing all three games during the Group Stage with a 6-0 aggregate. And guess what? At that time, they also faced Mexico and Venezuela.

Question Of The Day

What was Mexico´s result in its last Copa America?

El Tri reached the quarterfinals, losing 7-0 to Chile.
