World Cup Hosts in 1954
The 1954 FIFA World Cup was the tournament’s fifth edition, and Switzerland was selected as the host country. They hosted the World Cup for the first and only time. They performed well, reaching the quarter-finals for the third time in their history.
During that tournament, they lost 7-5 to Austria in the game that still holds the record for the most scored goals in a World Cup match. West Germany won the cup by defeating tournament favorites Hungary 3–2 in the final, their first World Cup title.
Three Times in the Quarter-Finals
In 1934, Switzerland took part in its first-ever World Cup. They were part of a line-up of quarter-finalists consisting entirely of European teams. Although they were eliminated by Czechoslovakia, they can look back fondly on a thrilling first-round victory against the Netherlands.
Four years later, the Swiss booked their place in the quarter-final by defeating Germany 4-2. However, the eventual runner-up, Hungary, ended the Swiss run at the quarter-final stage.
In Brazil in 1950, the Swiss team went out in the first round, but in the 1954 World Cup, they played their way into the quarter-finals as the tournament hosts. However, after leading 3-0, they allowed Austria to fight back to claim a 7-5 victory and a semi-final spot.
In 1962 and 1966, Switzerland failed to progress beyond the first round, and in 1994 they headed home after a 3-0 loss to Spain in the second round. World cup soccer 2022 will be Switzerland’s 12th participation in the World Cup.

Switzerland’s World Cup Record
Switzerland did not concede a goal for 559 minutes across seven World Cup matches from 1994 to 2010. The streak began after allowing Spain’s 86th-minute goal in the Round of 16 matchups at the 1994 World Cup, continued through four clean sheets at the 2006 World Cup, and one clean sheet in the 2010 World Cup before conceding a 75th-minute goal to Chile in the second group stage game on June 21st, 2010. It’s very important to note that they failed to qualify for the 1998 and 2002 World Cup finals.
World Cup 2022 Expectations
For Switzerland, the 2022 World Cup provides yet another opportunity to correct the critics. At last summer’s European Championships, they pulled off the upset, beating France in the Round of 16, so why not make it out of the group stages once again? They have players with a lot of experience, like Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri, Ricardo Rodriguez, Manuel Akanji, Yann Sommer, and Breel Embolo.
On their day, Switzerland can beat just about any side in the world. They were drawn into Group G together with Brazil, Cameroon, and Serbia. The latest soccer odds price them at -120 to qualify in the knockout stages.
