Slovenia: The Underdogs of Group C

Slovenia had to wait right until the final matchday to secure automatic qualification for the Euros, but their 2-1 victory over third-placed Kazakhstan actually saw them finish level on points with Denmark at the top of Group H.

They also netted more goals than the Scandinavians and allowed fewer, but they finished second because of an inferior head-to-head record, with the 2-1 defeat in Copenhagen proving decisive.

Germany 2024 will be just Slovenia’s second appearance at the European Championship, coming 24 years after their first, and hopes will be high that RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, who scored five times in qualifying, will make a big impact at the tournament.

The amazing Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak is likely to prove even more crucial, though, to Slovenia’s chances of getting out of their group, which contains England, Denmark, and Serbia.

They are huge favorites to finish last in their group priced at -140 soccer odds and just three teams are worst priced to win the trophy (Slovakia, Albania, and Georgia).

Matjaz Kek has already finalized his 26-man team ensuring his side has plenty of time to get in the right frame of mind ahead of the tournament.

They face qualifying opponents Denmark in Group C, as well as tough opponents in England and Serbia. While many don’t expect them to progress to the knockout stages, anything can happen in tournament football.

A 2-0 surprise win against Portugal in a recent friendly indicates they have quality on their day, though every Euro 2024 squad contains some form of talent that will look to trouble the opposition in some way or another this summer.

Slovenia’s Strengths and Weaknesses

There’s reason for optimism with Jan Oblak in goal and promising striker Benjamin Sesko up front and ready to plunder as many strikes past unlucky goalkeepers as possible at Euro 2024 this summer.

Oblak has remained the standout talent recently, but that might be about to change. Sesko has impressed for both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig and is already attracting interest from top European clubs this summer, including Arsenal.

The athletic striker who has been compared to Erling Haaland has scored 14 goals in 31 games in the German top-flight league this season, as well as two goals in the UEFA Champions League. The striker will also look to continue his good form for his country this summer, as he has scored 11 in 28 Slovenian appearances.

Slovenia forward Josip Ilicic was a surprise inclusion when Matjaz Kek named his provisional Euro 2024 squad, with the player returning to international duty for the first time in more than two years.

His performances this season, scoring eight league goals and helping Maribor finish second in the standings, have earned him a chance to finally play at a major tournament.

Unfortunately for Slovenia, their lack of experience at this level will be their detriment. They kick off the tournament against Denmark and are priced at +380 to win the match, so we won’t include them in our soccer parlay bets.
