Disappointing News for Liverpool and Bayern Munich Who Were Interested in Hiring the Leverkusen Boss

Big Win for Leverkusen

 Alonso’s Decision

Alonso has quickly made a name for himself as a top coach in a short time. He took charge of Leverkusen in the relegation zone in October 2022 and managed to lead them to finish sixth. And this season what he has achieved has been impressive with 38 soccer games without defeats and commanding the top of the Bundesliga table.

For months now the Spaniard has been linked with a move to Liverpool since for both the fans and the club’s board he is the ideal successor for Klopp who leaves Anfield in the summer.

Bayern Munich has also been very interested in Alonso’s services, as they are looking for a replacement for Thomas Tuchel.

Both clubs were betting that they could convince Alonso due to his history as a former player.

However, in a press conference, Alonso said that he is staying at Leverkusen. “We have had a lot of speculation regarding my future,” he said. “Until now we have had so many games, been pretty busy and focused, and I wanted to reflect during the international break and take a decision.

“The players gave me so many reasons to keep believing in the team – for their commitment, for their desire, for their hunger to have a great season. My job is not over here.”

 Liverpool’s Next Move

Liverpool FC, in particular, is shifting their focus to alternative candidates, with Sporting head coach Ruben Amorim and Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi emerging as potential successors to Jurgen Klopp. The news comes as a blow to Liverpool fans who had hoped for Alonso’s return to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp himself had expressed admiration for Alonso’s coaching abilities, acknowledging the Spaniard’s potential as a standout candidate for the role.

 Bayern Munich’s Perspective

Similarly,  FC Bayern Munich has acknowledged the challenges of luring Alonso away from Leverkusen. De Zerbi and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery feature on Bayern’s shortlist to replace Tuchel.

Max Eberl, Bayern’s sporting director, has been in discussions with De Zerbi in recent weeks because the club aims to reach an agreement with a new coach in April. Eberl mentioned in conversations with Sky Sports Germany: “As soon as possible. We are now entering April. It would be nice if we could get it done in April – without there being an ultimatum. If it takes longer, then it takes a bit longer. We want to make the best decision.”
