Alaves: In Desperate Need of Points

During their six seasons in the Spanish top-flight league, Alaves has largely impressed at this level since earning promotion in 2016, but they are facing a serious fight to retain their spot in La Liga for another campaign. They managed to earn just 25 points this season sitting bottom of the table, six points behind the first salvation spot.

They managed to beat Rayo Vallecano two rounds ago but they immediately return to losing ways dropping all three points on the road against relegation-threatened Mallorca. They don’t have a busy schedule having to play Villarreal, Celta Vigo, Espanyol, Levante, and Cadiz but every single point is crucial for them. Away to Levante and at home to Cadiz, could be crucial, but they must be in the distance heading into the final straight – it’s very important to pick up point/s from this clash.

They have no other choice but to risk it all and enter this clash guns blazing and they have a great opportunity to pull off the upset given the circumstances. Alaves will again be missing Javi Lopez through injury, but the home side is otherwise, in strong shape, with head coach Velazquez set to having close to a full squad. The hosts have not been in action since April 19 so they will be fresh. We don’t expect them to beat Villarreal so we won’t include them in our soccer picks and parlays but we do expect them to hold the Yellow Submarine to a draw game and add one more point to their season tally.

Villarreal: Outclassed by Liverpool

The visitors showed their limits in the Champions League losing 2-0 away to Liverpool in the first leg of their UCL semifinal. The Yellow Submarine has enough on their plate to reach the European Cup final, but their recent league form has been strong and they enter this clash on the back of two domestic wins in a row.

They gave it all against the Reds in the midweek action and we expect them to be affected by that defeat. Unai Emery’s side is currently sitting seventh on the table, just three points behind sixth-placed Real Sociedad but only four points ahead of eighth-placed Athletic Bilbao. They have everything to play for to book their spot in one of the European competitions. Europa League is much better than the Conference League, but they must leapfrog Real Sociedad in the standings – so, every match is a must-win.

Still, we expect them to rest many of their key players for this clash and have them fresh for Tuesday’s return leg against Liverpool.

Gerard Moreno and Alberto Moreno remain on the sidelines through injury, but the visitors did not pick up any injury issues. There will be changes from the side that took to the field against Jurgen Klopp’s side, with Aissa Mandi, Yeremi Pino, and Manu Trigueros potentially coming into the XI, while Alfonso Pedraza, Paco Alcacer, and Boulaye Dia are also pushing for spots in the team. If you’re betting online you should always be aware of the importance of the game for both squads and dig deep to find the best betting value.

Alaves vs Villarreal Head-to-Head

Alaves has the worst road record in La Liga this term, picking up just six points from 17 matches, but they have been relatively solid at home considering their spot on the table, collecting 19 points from 16 matches, winning five times in the process. Villarreal has the fourth-best home record in La Liga this term, but they’ve found it difficult away from home, picking up a meager 17 points from 16 matches, and the Champions League semi-finalists have lost three of their last four league games away from home. Villarreal recorded a 5-2 victory over Alaves in the reverse fixture earlier this season, but they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the corresponding game between the two sides last term.

Alaves vs Villarreal Predictions

In spite of being on the road, the visitors enter this clash as favorites being priced at +115 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds while the goal line is set at 2½.

Alaves has been the worst team in the Spanish topflight this season and it is no wonder they are placed at the bottom of the table. They have scored the least number of goals in the La Liga and they have also managed to post a total of just six wins all through the campaign. Still, this is the perfect spot for them to win at least one point from this clash given the circumstances (Villarreal’s UCL commitments).

As we previously stated, a win is crucial for the hosts but should be happy also with a draw against one of Europe’s top teams this season. We are taking the draw as our official pick. In terms of goals, we expect a lower-scoring game.

  • Pick: Draw at +240
