AS Roma: Out of Form
After the heartbreak of defeat in the Europa League final on Wednesday, AS Roma must rally once more to secure a berth in the same competition next season. With Juventus just a point behind in the table, Jose Mourinho knows his side needs to beat Spezia on Sunday to secure their place.
It will be a tired group of players that take to Stadio Olimpico, thanks to the grueling final that went all the way to a penalty shoot-out. Roma should have the talent to claim all three points, but fatigue could play its part too. And it’s not only about fatigue. It’s also about the confidence level and the worry that their manager will leave the team next week, so if you’re betting online, you shouldn’t trust the hosts here.
Roma boss Jose Mourinho is expected to leave the club after the current season. There has been a fair amount of speculation, with reports stating that his future with the club will be decided after the Europa League final against Sevilla. The Portuguese is suspended for the game against Spezia, and we might have seen Mourinho on the touchline for the last time as the Roma boss.
Mourinho will be dealing with some very tired players but will still want to field a strong side able to claim the three points. Andrea Belotti could start in place of Paulo Dybala but expect to see a lot of changes as Roma chases the win it needs.
Spezia: Fighting for Survival
Spezia suffered a heavy 4-0 loss to Torino at the weekend and are sitting just above the relegation zone ahead of Sunday’s encounter. Since 18th-place Verona takes on AC Milan on the road in the decider, Spezia should be happy with one point from the Stadio Olimpico clash.
The final relegation spot is going down to the wire, as Verona and Spezia are locked on 31 points and could be heading for a play-off. Under the new rules this season, rather than using a head-to-head record, if two teams are level on points for relegation, it will be decided on a play-off match.
Leonardo Semplici would rather not have to prepare for that outcome and hopes his side can perform one last time in Rome. But the 4-0 home defeat to Torino last weekend does not suggest they have much of a chance, so we won’t include them in our Serie A picks and parlays.
Semplici does not have any new injury worries, so he should go with an unchanged starting lineup this weekend. Ethan Ampadu should be fine to start the game, although he could be one of several changes taking place throughout the encounter.
AS Roma vs Spezia Head-to-Head
Mourinho’s troops are winless in seven Serie A matches, losing three. Roma’s return of seven wins to-nil from their first eight home league games of 2023 now seems like a distant memory rather than a source of inspiration.
Spezia can’t afford to bank on Verona losing as they aim to pull off a maiden league win over Roma at the sixth attempt. Their head-to-head record against the hosts is very poor, never beating them in Serie A. This season they won just two road games allowing 30 goals in 18 away fixtures.
