Aston Villa: Playing for Pride
Steven Gerrard will hope to close out the current season positively as the manager looks to achieve good results in their last two games. It seems like a busy week for Aston Villa as they face Burnley on Thursday while ending the league against Manchester City on Sunday, hoping to impact the title race on the last matchday.
A few months ago, Aston Villa was somewhat dragged near the relegation zone after a poor period. After collecting seven points in three games against Leicester, Norwich and Burnley, Villa pulled away toward safety and remained well clear of the drop zone with 44 points collected in 36 games. They are sitting 13th in the standings and they are looking to end the season in the top half of the table.
There were multiple issues in the Villa squad with regard to injuries and fitness but it looks like most of the players are fully fit. Ollie Watkins is the player to watch for the hosts. He scored three goals in his previous four appearances for the club — against Palace last weekend, in the 3-1 win against Burnley in the reverse fixture and the 2-0 victory against Norwich. Jacob Ramsey is also back in training, and he could be involved in the midweek fixture. Whether it is from the start or off the bench remains a question. Emiliano Buendia has also to training and should be available for this clash.
Aston Villa announced the permanent signing of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona for an undisclosed fee. The Brazilian playmaker has signed a contract until 2026 after initially signing on a loan from the Catalan giants in the January transfer window. He’s an important piece of the puzzle for Villa and he will definitely continue to deliver. Villa has nothing to play for but pride so we can’t afford to include them in our soccer picks and parlays.
Burnley: Fighting for Survival
Four points from their final two games, away at Aston Villa on Thursday and at home to Newcastle on Sunday, will be enough for Burnley to book their Premier League tickets for the next season. Any slips will open the door for Leeds. They are sitting 18th in the standings, one point behind salvation, but they have a game in hand on Leeds.
Burnley’s decision to sack Sean Dyche was met with a lot of raised eyebrows. However, since taking over on April 15, Mike Jackson has done a decent job for the Clarets. They have won three of their six games since he was appointed and was named the Manager of the Month for April. They’ve found the back of the net in five of their last six Premier League games, but that run stopped last weekend when they lost 1-0 to Tottenham on the road.
Burnley lost a key center-half to injury in James Tarkowski, who came off in the reverse fixture against Villa with a tight hamstring and has emerged as a major doubt for this trip. This clash may also come too soon for Ben Mee and Jay Rodriguez while Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Ashley Westwood, and Matej Vydra are also confirmed as injured. If you’re betting, you should know that Burnley is forced to enter this clash all guns blazing so we expect goals at both ends.
Aston Villa vs Burnley Head-to-Head
This is a fixture that has often produced goals at both ends of the pitch in recent seasons. Aston Villa managed to win the reverse fixture, beating Burnley 3-1 on the road just 10 days ago. Burnley managed to earn four points last season against Villa, beating them 3-2 on home soil and sharing the spoils in the goalless draw on the road. We’ve seen both teams contributing on the scoresheet in four of the last five mutual encounters between the two sides. Burnley is one of the worst road teams this season, winning just two of 18 away games and conceding 27 goals. Aston Villa was far from good in front of their fans, winning just six in 18 home games and allowing 28 goals in the process.

Aston Villa vs Burnley Predictions
The hosts enter this clash at +100 favorites on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds while the goal line is set at 2½.
As we previously stated, Aston Villa is only playing for pride, but let’s not forget that this is the last match of the season in front of their fans and they will definitely try to finish on a positive note and give them something for which to cheer. On top of that, we expect them to use their best starting lineup and they have amazing attacking firepower.
On the other side, Burnley is forced to win so they can’t sit back and defend, knowing that three points will be another step to safety. We expect this game to be end-to-end with both sides creating many scoring chances, so we will avoid the winners market and focus on the goals one.
