Atalanta vs Fiorentina Betting Preview
Back in September, Fiorentina got a huge Serie A road win over Atalanta in Bergamo. Dusan Vlahovic, who is off to Juventus, scored two goals on penalties as the Viola won, 2-1.
Atalanta were previously on a three game win streak in this fixture. However, Fiorentina did beat La Dea in the 2020 Coppa Italia Round of 16.
Atalanta Hitting Rough Patch
Atalanta dropped out of the top four after a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Cagliari, who started the day in the relegation zone.
The Islanders opened the scoring with a Gaston Pereira finish early in the second half. Atalanta’s problems compounded as goalkeeper Juan Musso was sent off moments later for recklessly stopping a Cagliari breakaway.
Even so, Atalanta struck next. Jose Luis Palomino leveled the match with a header from a rebound off a Duvan Zapata shot. It didn’t matter. Cagliari used a Pereira breakaway goal to win the game and complete his double.
The loss ended a three game shutout streak as Atalanta’s defense looked shaky throughout. Perhaps Gian Piero Gasperini’s rare shift to four at the back had something to do with it. Expect some adjustments heading into Thursday’s match.
During their shutout streak, La Dea Beat Venezia, 2-0, in the round of 16 and drew, 0-0, with both Inter and Lazio. One goal in three matches is very unlike Atalanta with the likes of Zapata, Luis Muriel and Mario Pasalic on their side. An omission, a notable one, is attacking midfielder Josip Ilicic, who’s battling a mental-health issue and not currently with the team.
Atalanta were one of the better soccer picks in the first half of the season, but they’re out of this year’s Champions League and in serious danger of playing Europa League football next season.
Fiorentina Starts Life After Vlahovic
Fiorentina lost, 3-0, to Lazio in Brazilian striker Arthur Cabral’s debut. The Viola made a few defensive lapses and Lazio capitalized, as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile scored. The Biancocelesti added a third on a Fiorentina own goal. Life after Vlahovic could’ve gone better.
There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the Cabral signing, though, given the former Basel man trailed only Robert Lewandowski for most top-flight European goals in 2021-22. Whether he’ll be able to transfer his output to Serie A remains to be seen, but surely the match against Atalanta will be a great test for him.
To further soften the sting of losing Vlahovic, Fiorentina also added right\-winger Jonathan Ikone and forward Krzysztof Piatek in the January transfer window.
Since destroying Genoa, 6-0, in Vlahovic’s last match, Fiorentina drew with Cagliari in a match they were expected to win before that 3-0 loss to Lazio. As with Atalanta, the Viola have just one Serie A win in their last five matches and have been one to avoid betting online recently.
However, one of Fiorentina’s recent wins was a big one. They triumphed in a wild Coppa Italia round of 16 match vs Napoli. The ten-man Viola scored three times in extra time to defeat nine-man Napoli, 5-2.
Atalanta vs Fiorentina Prediction
Obviously, it’s going to take time for Fiorentina to pose a Dusan Vlahovic sized-threat to opposing defenses again. Atalanta have also struggled lately, but we think they’ll manage to avoid defeat for a second consecutive match in front of their home fans.
Not only that, this is a match they should go on to win. Bet sports online and take Atalanta.
