They met for the last time in the 2019-20 UCL Round of 16. Atletico Madrid won the first leg 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Saul Niguez. The second leg was a thriller, which Atletico won 3-2 in extra time. Marcos Llorente was the Man of the Match after scoring twice.
Games between these two are usually low-scoring. The total went under 2½ goals in five of their previous seven meetings. Nevertheless, you can expect goals since they’ve never drawn 0-0.
Now or Never
Leading Atletico Madrid to the UCL title would make Diego Simeone the best manager in team history. Domestically, he already led them to win La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Super Cup. Internationally, he already led them to win the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.
In 2014 and 2016, he came very close to leading them to the UCL title, but Real Madrid meddled. I’m not exaggerating when saying that their current roster is way better than those that finished as runners-up. That’s why it’s now or never for Simeone and the Colchoneros.
Most recently, they beat AC Milan 2-1 at San Siro (UCL) and Barcelona 2-0 at Wanda Metropolitano (La Liga). Those results fueled the team’s confidence prior to the international break and now they’re ready to return to action. Atletico didn’t play last weekend, which means they’ll be more rested, making them a more tempting betting online underdog.
One of the biggest differences between the current roster and those from 2014 and 2016 is having Luis Suarez. He’s one of the best center strikers in the world and has had a great start to the season. He has scored five goals in all competitions.
Beating them at Wanda Metropolitano isn’t easy. In fact, they remain unbeaten in all competitions with a 2-3-0 record. They also are 1-4 against the spread and over/under. Last, but not least, they finished with a clean sheet in their last three home games.
Atletico is well known for playing on the counterattack, don’t expect that to change. They don’t need too many opportunities in front of goal to make you pay.
Over the Moon
What better way to return from the international break than with a 5-0 victory, right? Well, that’s what Liverpool did last Saturday against Watford in the English Premier League. Roberto Firmino (three), Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were the scorers. Trust me, you won’t find a more efficient attacking trio than this.
For Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, Salah is currently the best player in the world. Yes, above Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, etc. Not that I’ll completely agree but I wouldn’t be upset if he wins the Ballon D’or.
“For me, he’s the best. He is in this age where you can still improve, and he’s doing that constantly. Mo is already on the top level and there’s still a lot to come from him because of his desire,” said Klopp after their last game.
Maybe you don’t need more reasons to include Liverpool in your soccer picks, but I do have a couple more. Regarding the UCL, Liverpool remain perfect with a 2-0-0 record, eight goals for and three against. Most recently, they crushed Porto 5-1 on the road. Once again, Salah (two), Firmino (two) and Mane were the scorers.
The Reds are one of the best teams playing on the road. They’re unbeaten in all competitions thanks to a 5-1-0 record. They also are 5-1 against the spread and 4-0-2 over/under.
Physically, the Reds will be more banged up, but they won’t be needing time to get back into competition mode. A draw wouldn’t be a bad result for them but, knowing Klopp, they’ll go for the kill.

Final Analysis, Predictions
Defender Stefan Savic won’t be available due to suspension. Atletico Madrid is going to miss him, but they should still be able to put up a fight. Offensively, Suarez and Antoine Griezmann could become a real headache to the visitors’ defensive unit.
Liverpool has several players out, but nothing to worry about. Defensively, Virgil van Dijk has been incredible since coming back from injury. Offensively, well, they’ve plenty of different ways to hurt the home side.
Expect a fast-paced match in which the total will go under, again. Only 19 percent of the betting market believes the home side can pull off an upset.
Don’t forget to check the props our sportsbook is offering for this and other games to increase your winning chances. Our score prediction is offering a +550 price. Salah will attract a lot of attention, but go with Mane scoring Liverpool’s goal at +225. Mane’s speed will drive Atletico’s defense crazy.
Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1, Liverpool 1
