Rematch, of Sorts

It’s Not Just Another Game

So, last season, Atletico Madrid suffered more than expected before advancing to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. Curiously, a victory in Porto made the difference. However, losing that game sent the Portuguese to the UEFA Europa League.

Therefore, Wednesday’s game is somewhat of a rematch, where the Spanish side dominates the soccer odds at a -120 price. Visitors will try to emulate Villarreal, who beat Atletico at Wanda Metropolitano two weeks ago.

Atletico Madrid: Heavy Favorites

Defeating both Real Madrid and Barcelona for the La Liga title isn’t easy, especially after starting 2-1-1. Things are a bit different in the UCL, where Atletico Madrid are heavily favored to win Group B. Besides Porto, Los Colchoneros also oppose Bayer Leverkusen and Club Brugge.

Why are they favorites? First, they’re the only team, out of those four, to have played the UCL Final in the last decade. In fact, they played in it twice. Second, they have a squad to spare, perhaps leaving Geoffrey Kondogbia, Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa and Mario Hermoso on the bench. That was what happened against Real Sociedad last Saturday.

…and last, but not least, manager Diego Simeone needs to win something this season. Otherwise, it may be very difficult for him to continue.

Los Colchoneros visited Real Sociedad last Saturday and drew, 1-1. Alvaro Morata scored the opener only five minutes into the game, but Sadiq Umar scored the equalizer in the second half.

Morata is another reason for you to consider including the Spanish side in your soccer picks. The 29-year-old striker returned to replace Luis Suarez and has done an excellent job so far. He has three goals, including a brace in La Liga opener against Getafe. He and Joao Felix have developed very good chemistry this season.

Finally, in the UCL, Los Colchoneros are 9-7-4 in their last 20 games at home.

Keep an Eye on Porto’s Taremi

Porto are playing with nothing to lose here. There’s no one expecting them to win at Wanda Metropolitano. That doesn’t mean they can’t prevail. In other words, all the pressure is on Atletico Madrid’s shoulders.

Now five games into the Primeira Liga campaign, the Dragons are 4-0-1, 12 goals for and four against. They defeated Gil Vicente on the road, 2-0. Mehdi Taremi and Wenderson Galeno were the scorers.

Taremi has had a great start to the season, the team’s top scorer with five goals in all of the competitions. Since joining the team in 2020, the Iranians averaged 18 goals a year. Who said a 30-year-old player couldn’t perform?

Joao Mario is another reason to consider Porto as the underdog. The 22-year-old right-back is quietly becoming one of the best in Europe. He is currently leading the team with two assists, learning from Pepe, who won it all with Real Madrid.

The visitors are offering a +375 price in the sportsbook. Once again, “tempting” comes to mind, since they already defeated Atletico in Madrid once. It was back in the 2009-2010 season, with no mercy, 3-0.

  • Atletico Madrid Victories: 4 (11 goals)
  • Porto Victories: 2 (10 goals)

These two collided in last season. First, they met in Madrid and drew, 0-0. It was a very physical game, as in nine yellow cards and one red.

Los Colchoneros won, 3-1, in Porto, the last 22 minutes one player short after Yannick Carrasco was dismissed. Note two of the three goals were after the red card. Antoine Griezmann, Angel Carrasco and Rodrigo de Paul were the scorers.

Atletico Madrid vs Porto Prediction

Atletico Madrid are known for having a defensive mindset, relying on the counter to score. It shouldn’t be a surprise that they’ve scored only five goals in La Liga, while Real Madrid and Barcelona have 11 each. We wouldn’t expect a goal fest. Los Colchoneros will win, but not easily.  Porto’s a well-balanced, experienced team that will be looking not to lose here, so a point would be gold for them. We are recommending you include the Draw-Atletico Madrid (Halftime-Fulltime) in your online ticket, as it’s offering a similar price to Porto’s.

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1, Porto 1.
