Atletico Madrid vs Valencia Game Preview, Live Stream, Odds, Picks & Predictions

Can anybody call Bugs Bunny? Because Atletico Madrid players are running out of the secret stuff. Los Colchoneros have had a rocky season and they just got eliminated from the Copa del Rey.

Now, defending the La Liga title is their best shot at not finishing the season in blank. It’s a long shot, but you know head coach Diego Simeone isn’t giving up.

Beating Valencia, which is offering a +700 price in the sportsbook, won’t be easy, but they have no other choice. Losing would be devastating and could make drop out of the top four.

Atletico Madrid vs Valencia 2022 La Liga Fixture 22

Atletico Madrid: Identity Crisis

Los Colchoneros had the toughest draw in the Copa del Rey Round of 16, but they were betting online favorites. At the end of the day, that wasn’t enough to rebuild their confidence and they lost 2-0 to Real Sociedad.

I’m not a head coach, but I think Simeone made a huge mistake by changing the system to 4-5-1. Plus, Joao Felix as your lone striker instead of Luis Suarez? Come on, Cholo, you’re better than that.

Missing Antoine Griezmann doesn’t help, but that’s not a valid excuse for Atletico to not put up a good fight. Especially when you see Suarez, Thomas Lemar and Matheus Cunha on the bench waiting for an opportunity.

Regarding La Liga, Los Colchoneros have two straight games without losing. First, they beat Rayo Vallecano 2-0 and, most recently, they drew 2-2 to Villarreal. We’re talking about two teams fighting for a UEFA Champions League ticket, showing how good Atletico can be.

Returning to Wanda Metropolitano could make a huge difference. Atletico has been considerably better when playing at home with a 5-3-1 record, 4-3-4 on the road.

Atletico Madrid’s predicted lineup: Jan Oblak; Sime Vrsaljko, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Mario Hermoso, Renan Lodi; Marcos Llorente, Koke, Rodrigo de Paul, Yannick Carrasco; Joao Felix, Luis Suarez.

 Valencia Still in Race

Valencia’s situation isn’t very different, but nobody was expecting them to fight for the title. Here’s another difference: Valencia managed to advance to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals by beating Atletico Baleares 1-0.

Valencia’s sitting in ninth place, three points behind sixth place — the last to grant a ticket for the Europa League. That’s why they’re still in the race because their main objective is to qualify for a UEFA competition.

Most recently, they drew 1-1 to Sevilla, another title contender. They were behind since the beginning of the first half but managed to even the score right before halftime. They did it thanks to Goncalo Guedes, the team’s top scorer with eight goals.

Valencia deserves to be the soccer betting underdog, but that doesn’t mean the visitors won’t put up a fight. They have scored in five consecutive road games.

Just like its opponent, Valencia is missing two key players in Carlos Soler and Maximiliano Gomez. That’s why they’ve been heavily relying on the counter-attack. Plus, Jose Gaya won’t be available due to suspension.

Valencia’s predicted lineup: Jaume Domenech; Thierry Correia, Mouctar Diakhaby, Oscar Alderete, Antonio Latorre; Helder Costa, Hugo Guillamon, Denis Cheryshev, Yunus Musah; Hugo Duro, Goncalo Guedes.

  • Previous Matches: 177
  • Atletico Madrid Victories: 68 (269 goals)
  • Valencia Victories: 61 (260 goals)
  • Draws: 48

The first meeting of the season between these two was a goal-fest that ended 3-3. Atletico Madrid was up 3-1 when the clock hit the 89-minute mark, but somehow Valencia figured things out. Hugo Duro scored twice to even the score and was named the Man of the Match.

Valencia hasn’t been able to beat Atletico in their last 10 meetings but drew five times. Last, but not least, you can expect goals. The total went over 2½ goals in three of their last five encounters.

Atletico Madrid vs Valencia Prediction

I know it seems like it’s now or never for Valencia to finally beat Atletico Madrid again, but hold on. With Soler and Gomez out, Atletico’s defense won’t have too much work and will be able to help on attack. As I mentioned before, the visitors will put up a fight — enough for the total to go over, but not for you to include them in your soccer picks.

Plus, if Atletico loses, it would be the beginning of the end for Simeone. Nobody in Madrid wants that.

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2, Valencia 1

Pick: Over 2½ goals (-105)
