The last time Bayern Munich didn’t win the Bundesliga title was in the 2011-12 season. Borussia Dortmund won it that time. Precisely, Borussia Dortmund comes in as the bigger threat for the reigning champions to not win their 10th straight title. However, recent scores and odds indicate that Bayern Munich remains the clear favorite.
German Bundesliga Breakdown
Comfortable at the Top
Bayern Munich did it again. They faced Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park last weekend and won 3-2. That allowed them to increase their advantage at the top to four points, but that’s not all. Bayern also has a 30+ goal-differential.
Robert Lewandowski scored twice to help Bayern come from behind. Dortmund opened the can five minutes into the game thanks to Julian Brandt, but it didn’t last long. Lewandowski leveled the score four minutes later.
Kingsley Coman put Bayern in front with a late first-half goal, but then Erling Haaland decided to appear. The Norwegian scored only three minutes into the second half. He recently returned from a serious injury, but it seems like nothing changed.
When it seemed that the game was going to end with a draw, Lewandowski scored again. This time he did it from the penalty spot with only 13 minutes left on the clock and Dortmund couldn’t react.
Bayern has always been the soccer betting favorite to win the title, but now even more. They opened at -600 and now they’re offering a -2000 price. On the other hand, Dortmund went from +700 to +900.
There’s still a lot of football to be played, but I don’t think Bayern will slow down.
Fighting for Top Six
Of course, every team wants to win the title, but only one can. The rest have to settle for finishing in the top six and qualifying for an international competition.
Despite losing to Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund still has a three-point advantage over third place. They shouldn’t have any trouble getting back into the winning column when facing Bochum next weekend.
Bayer Leverkusen is the only team that hasn’t lost in its last four games. Most recently, they crushed Greuther Furth 7-1, allowing them to climb to third place. They already lost to Bayern and Dortmund, but will have the chance to take revenge next year.
Freiburg, Hoffenheim, and FC Union Berlin complete the top six, and all three won last weekend. Freiburg crushed Borussia Monchengladbach 6-0. No other team has allowed fewer goals than its 13, not even Bayern. Hoffenheim beat Frankfurt 3-2, while FC Union Berlin beat RB Leipzig 2-1.
Buckle up, because Freiburg will play host to Hoffenheim on Saturday. If you want to include Freiburg in your online gambling ticket, you should know it is offering a +135 price. On the other hand, Hoffenheim is offering +190.
At the Bottom
You might want to avoid including these teams in your soccer picks. Greuther Furth is sitting in last place with one point, 12 goals for and 46 against. Only a miracle could save them from falling to Bundesliga 2.
Arminia is also in the relegation zone with 10 points, 10 goals for and 20 against. They won only one of their last five games. Last, but not least, Augsburg is in 16th place with 13 points. Curiously enough, Augsburg is one of the two teams that have beaten Bayern. The team that finishes in 16th place doesn’t go to the Bundesliga 2 automatically. They face a Bundesliga 2 team in a two-game series.
This fixture, Arminia will have a great opportunity to get back into the winning column. They’ll play host to Hertha Berlin, a team sitting in 14th place that hasn’t won in its last five games. If Arminia wins and Augsburg loses to Koln, they’ll get out of the relegation zone.
For the Gold
Lewandowski is the clear favorite to win the Bundesliga Golden Boot, but we’ve a new contender. Other than Haaland, of course. I’m talking about Patrik Schick from Bayer Leverkusen.
Lewandowski leads the scoring sheet with 16 goals. He alone has scored more goals than six teams. I can’t understand why this man hasn’t won the Ballon d’Or. He’s followed by Schick with 12 goals, including four in Leverkusen’s last game.
I want to give Haaland some extra credit. He missed several games due to injury, but still is among the top scorers with 11 goals. This is Haaland’s last season with Dortmund, no doubt about it. All European powerhouses want to sign him, including Manchester United. The Red Devils have a new plan to try and seal the deal.
If you want to play it safe, stick with Lewandowski. If you want to go with a dark horse, go with Schick, because Haaland could be more focused on choosing a new team. That doesn’t mean he’s not going to keep scoring, but things around him will be more vulnerable.
