Belgium’s Way Better than That

It couldn’t have been worse for Belgium in their debut, they suffered a 4-1 humiliation against by Netherlands at King Baudouin Stadium. We did think the total would go over the number, but didn’t expect the visitors to romp..

The Flying Dutchmen won a contested first half, 1-0. Then, in a 14-minute span, it was 4-0. The two goals by Memphis Depay turned out to be too much for the Red Devils. There’s also the fact Thibaut Courtois didn’t play. Real Madrid’s goalkeeper stepped aside (injury recovery).

Courtois is one of the best in the world, there’s no question. However, not having him isn’t an excuse to lose, 4-1. Belgium’s roster includes Jan Vertonghen, Thomas Meunier, Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku. That was supposed to be too much experience and skill to drop the ball in that way.

It wasn’t Simon Mignolet’s (Courtois’ replacement) fault, but we expect manager Roberto Martinez to give Matz Sels a chance against Poland. Sels had a great season with Strasbourg in Ligue 1. Yannick Carrasco and Dries Mertens could also receive an opportunity to play from the start.
