Lecce have not won or kept a clean sheet since Sept. 22, when they beat 10-man Genoa via a late goal from Remi Oudin, but they nevertheless sit 13th in the Serie A table after drawing four of their last six matches, one of which saw them erase a two-goal deficit and grab a point against AC Milan.
They’ll be facing off against one of the most in-form sides in Serie A as they take on Bologna on Sunday. Visiting Bologna is the favorite in the soccer betting odds.
With the exception of the Milan stalemate and an impressive start to the campaign that would see Lecce beat Lazio 2-1 and draw 2-2 to Fiorentina, Roberto D’Aversa’s side have generally struggled against Italy’s top sides this season, losing 2-1 to Roma, 4-0 to Napoli, 1-0 to Juventus, and 1-0 to Torino. Apart from their win against Genoa, their sole clean sheet came on September 3 in a 2-0 win against last-placed Salernitana.
Bologna Chasing Top-Four Spot
Whilst the Las Vegas sportsbooks may not be buying into the Bologna hype just yet, with the Rossoblu being valued at +1400 to finish in the top four, there’s no debate that Thiago Motta’s side have been the breakout stars of the opening third of the Serie A season. The last time Bologna were playing in a major European competition (with the exception of the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup) was 1999-00, the same year that Motta left Brazil as a 17-year-old and joined Barcelona’s academy.
Since then, Motta has won the Champions League with Barcelona and conquered a historic treble with Inter Milan, helped establish a dynasty in France with Paris Saint-Germain, and at 41, he is working magic with a Bologna side that is daring to dream and that is giving Serie A betting aficionados plenty to consider.
One betting prediction that is certainly worth your time is Bologna to score over 1.5 goals with incredibly low odds being offered at +170. Having opened November with a 4-2 loss to Parma in the Coppa Italia, Lecce have conceded two goals in each of their last three. As for Bologna, they have scored two goals in a total of six matches, including their recent 2-0 win against Torino. Apart from their 2-1 loss to Fiorentina on Nov. 12, you’d have to go all the way back to Aug. 21 for their last defeat of the season.
There are plenty of exciting young talents on this Bologna side, from Scottish midfielder Lewis Ferguson (24) and Dan Ndoye (23), but perhaps the brightest star of the moment is Joshua Zirkzee (22) with three goals and one assist in his last four and a total of six goals and two assists in 14 matches. Having bounced around from Bayern to Parma to Anderlecht, the Dutch striker is finally finding some stability for a Bologna side that is proving to be quite more formidable than the betting lines indicate. I’m backing him to lead Bologna to victory against Lecce.

Bologna and Juventus are the only teams in the top eight who are not competing in Europe and they are certainly putting their extra energy to good use. The Rossoblu currently sit sixth in the table, which earns qualification to the Europa Conference League playoff round. They are level on 21 points with fifth-place AS Roma and three behind Napoli.
Alongside Nice, Girona, and Bayer Leverkusen, they have been one of the revelations of the 2023-24 season, and they have the potential to make this a magical campaign at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t be adding Thiago Motta’s Bologna to your soccer predictions today.
Question Of The Day
Which Serie A matchup offers the best player props?
Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee has had a goal contribution in five of his last six Serie A matches, and he has what it takes to extend that streak on Sunday against Lecce.
