Bordeaux vs Marseille: Game Preview, Live Stream, Odds, Picks & Predictions
We all know that PSG is the clear betting online favorite to win the Ligue 1 title. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other things at stake. For example, Marseille wants to return to the UEFA Champions League. To accomplish that, they need to finish in the top three.
On the other hand, Bordeaux is fighting to not fall in the relegation zone. Playing in Ligue 2 would be a huge difference, mainly from an economic point of view.

Does that combination sound like the recipe for a very entertaining game? I think it does.

Struggling Hosts Need to Do Better at Home
Prior to the start of the season, Bordeaux wasn’t among the soccer betting favorites to win the title. However, nobody expected to see them at the bottom, including me. Last season, they finished closer to the top 10 than to the relegation zone.
Curiously enough, Bordeaux has played a lot better against the powerhouses. For example, they recently lost 5-2 to Strasbourg, but drew 2-2 to Lyon. They lost their last game to Lille, the reigning champions, but put up a good fight. They even got the lead at some point, but Burak Yilmaz and Jonathan David were simply too much.
Bordeaux has won only one game at home, but also has four draws. I think that’s enough to consider them a tempting underdog. That and the fact that losing could send them to the relegation zone. If they lose, they will need some help from Strasbourg and Lille, who’ll be facing Metz (18th) and Lorient (19th).
Last weekend, they were eliminated from the French Cup after losing 3-0 to Stade Brestois. But you know what? I think that’s better for them, because now they can focus on turning things around in Ligue 1.
Bordeaux’s predicted lineup: Benoit Costil; Timothee Pembele, Abdel Medioub, Laurent Koscielny, Ricardo Mangas; Fransergio Rodrigues, Jean Onana, Javairo Dilrosun, Yacine Adli, Alberth Elis; Hwang Eui-Jo.
Marseille Exceeding Expectations
As I mentioned before, we all know that beating PSG for the title is pretty much impossible. However, Nice, Marseille, Rennes and Montpellier are putting up a good fight, especially Nice and Marseille.
Marseille currently sits in third place, 13 points behind PSG, but it has played one fewer game. They lost only one of their last 10 games, including a tie with PSG. Most recently, they drew 1-1 to Reims thanks to a late goal from Dimitri Payet. By the way, he’s having a great season and is the team’s top scorer with seven goals.
We’re not talking about a particularly good team on offense, but they do excel on defense. No other team has allowed fewer goals than Marseille with 15 in 18 games. That’s 0.8 goals per game and they didn’t allow any against PSG, the top scoring team in the league.
Head coach Jorge Sampaoli has done a great job establishing a winning mentality. He’s one of the few coaches that still likes to play 3-4-3. That allows them to control possession, like they did in each of their last three games.
No major injuries to report here. That also helps them to control the Las Vegas odds at -180, and yes, they deserve it. Plus, winning could boost them up to second place, but they also need Nice to not beat Stade Brestois.
Marseille’s predicted lineup: Pau Lopez; William Saliba, Duje Caleta-Car, Luan Peres; Valentin Rongier, Boubacar Kamara, Matteo Guendouzi, Gerson Santos; Dimitri Payet, Arkadiusz Milik, Cengiz Under.
Bordeaux vs Marseille Head to Head
- Previous Matches: 122
- Bordeaux Victories: 40 (149 goals)
- Marseille Victories: 40 (152 goals)
- Draws: 42
Bordeaux only won one of its last 10 meetings with Marseille, but also managed to draw four times. In fact, last season both of their Ligue 1 encounters finished with a draw, 0-0 and 2-2.
The total went under in seven of those games, but that doesn’t mean lack of intensity. Trust me, these two usually are the contrary.

Bordeaux vs Marseille Prediction
All Ligue 1 teams played for the last time on Dec. 22. I expect both to be a little rusty, but Marseille’s defensive unit will make the difference. They finished with a clean sheet in three of their last five games, expect that trend to continue. That’s why, in addition to Marseille winning, our football prediction also includes the total going under.
Score Prediction: Marseille 1, Bordeaux 0
