Cádiz welcomes Barcelona to Andalusia for a midweek La Liga clash. Cádiz is coming off of its first win and will hope to continue its good recent form vs Barcelona.
Barcelona needed a 90th-minute winner to draw level with a struggling Granada team and has a bunch of key injuries heading into this match. Even so, Barça is a -180 soccer betting favorite to beat Cádiz away from home.
Game: Cádiz CF vs FC Barcelona
Location: Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla, Cádiz, Spain
Date/Time: Thursday, 4 p.m. ET
Head to Head
Shockingly, promoted Cádiz was undefeated vs Barcelona last season, picking up a 2-1 home win and a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou.
Veteran striker Álvaro Negredo scored the winner for Cádiz in the former. Barcelona’s goals came from an own goal and a penalty by the recently departed Lionel Messi, who has struggled in his early days at PSG.
Cádiz Searching for First Clean Sheet
Cádiz did well in its first La Liga season since 2005-06. The newcomers exceeded expectations by finishing 12th, which matched its best finish in the top tier.
Negredo, who turned 36 last month, led the team with eight La Liga goals and he’s found the net once this season.
Cádiz picked up its first win at Celta Vigo last weekend. Forward Anthony Lozano and defender Alfonso Espino opened the scoring before Celta Vigo added a consolation goal in Cadiz’s 2-1 win.
Keeping opponents out of the back of its net has been more of a challenge than scoring for Cádiz . Goalkeeper Jeremías Ledesma has yet to keep a clean sheet as Cádiz has conceded eight goals through five matches and been one of the more inconsistent soccer picks.
Life After Messi a Challenge
It wasn’t exactly the best week for Barcelona. Barça was trounced 3-0 by a domineering Bayern Munich side in the Champions League and followed it up with a disappointing 1-1 draw vs Granada, both at Camp Nou.
Barcelona is still in a solid position in La Liga and, with a win, could go as high as second, given FCB has a game in hand on most teams. However, Barcelona is going through a financial, personnel, identity and injury crisis that is overshadowing the season.
The play style vs Granada was almost unbelievable given the possession-based football Barça has made its name for over a dominant past 15 years. Barcelona put in 54 crosses and needed center back Ronald Araujo to save a point with a headed equalizer.
With Jordi Alba, Ousmane Dembele, Sergio Agüero, Martin Braithwaite and Pedri out, Barcelona is getting hit with injury woes at a bad time for manager Ronald Koeman. Koeman looks to be very much on the hot seat and it could be an uphill battle just to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League.
Until the injury woes subside and the goals start coming, Barcelona is a team to be wary of when betting online.
Barcelona at -180 is certainly a no go for me. This is a team that still hasn’t lost this season but has proven to be vulnerable. Barcelona hasn’t yet kept a clean sheet in the league and there’s reason to believe that streak will continue.
Cádiz might smell blood here and take the game to Barcelona, like it did last season when it was 1-0-1 vs the Catalan club. Cádiz to cover the one-goal spread at +105 looks like a solid value play.
