Rejoice! As one of the top five European leagues returns this weekend. We’re talking about Ligue 1, in which PSG comes in as the huge favorites to win the title, again, at -1000. The Parisians will begin the title defense against Clermont, a team whose main objective is to avoid relegation.
With Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, Neymar, Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Donnarumma on board, it’s hard to imagine PSG losing, but the first game of the season is always tricky. Last season, they lost four matches, all on the road. Even so, they dominate the soccer lines comfortably.
Clermont: Nothing to Lose
Nobody is expecting Clermont to defeat PSG. Last season, they finished in 17th place, three points away from the relegation zone. That’s why a draw would be a great result for the Lancers, who finished the 2021-22 campaign with a 4-6-9 record at home.
Aiming for much better results, the front office spared no expense. For starters, the Lancers signed centre-back Mateusz Wieteska from Legia Warszawa. Last season, they allowed 69 goals. Only Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux allowed more with 77 and 91. Both were relegated to Ligue 2.
Offensively, they signed Komnen Andric and Jeremie Bela. Andric, who cost them one million euros, used to play for Dinamo Zagreb, while Bela comes from Birmingham. He joined the French side on a free transfer.
The Lancers finished the preseason with a 4-0-2 record. They recorded a clean sheet in each of their last three games. Most recently, they defeated Toulouse, another team from Ligue 1, 1-0. Speaking of other Ligue 1 clubs, they also defeated Montpellier 2-0 and lost 3-1 to Lens.
Opening the season at home will always be an incentive, but even so the Lancers are offering a +600 price in the Sportsbook to win straight up. If they pull off the stunner, a $100 wager would become a $700 payout.
PSG: One Down, Three to Go
Last week, PSG won its first title of the season by crushing Nantes 4-0 in the French Supercup. That’s the annual match between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France champions. Messi, Neymar and Ramos were the scorers. The Brazilian scored twice. PSG’s roster is so talented that Mbappe didn’t play, and they still won without any trouble.
“Of course, I’m very happy, for the players, for the hard work that we put in during pre-season. It was important to bring this trophy back to Paris and I liked the way the team played for the whole game,” manager Christophe Galtier said to the press.
Galtier arrived at the team in order to replace Mauricio Pochettino, who was sacked after failing to lead the team to the UEFA Champions League title. That’s right, it’s not a secret that PSG’s main objective is to win the continental tourney. However, as mentioned before, they’ve talent to spare, that’s why they come in as the betting online favorites at -260 to start the season on the right foot.
Unlike Clermont, PSG didn’t invest much in new players for the attacking unit. Why? Well, they didn’t need to rebuild an already very good unit. Plus, they managed to retain Mbappe, who was about to join Real Madrid. That took a lot of money.
On the other hand, they added Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Nordi Mukiele to their defense. Don’t get me wrong, all three are great players, but they’re still young and have a lot to prove. Summing up, you can expect more of the same we saw last year, in every single way. PSG was the top scoring team in the league with an average of 2.3 goals per game. Defensively, they allowed less than one goal per game.

Clermont vs PSG Prediction
Not that it was necessary but winning the Super Cup motivated PSG even more. The Parisians are determined to silence the doubters. This will be Messi’s second season with the team, so he’s expected to play like when he was in Barcelona. Plus, Mbappe is well-rested and ready to go. Therefore, forget about an upset, PSG will start the season on the right foot and the team’s total will go over, which is precisely my soccer prediction.
