Colombia, South Korea Battle in WWC Opener

Colombia meets South Korea for the first time Monday night as they open their FIFA Women’s World Cup accounts, and if either team can record a victory in Sydney, Australia, it will greatly enhance its odds to reach the knockout stage.

South Korea sits 17th in the latest FIFA rankings and Colombia is 25th, both well behind Group H favorite Germany (second). But two teams from each group move on to the Round of 16 and the fourth member is longshot Morocco (72nd).

Colombia is making its third appearance in the event, while South Korea is participating for the fourth time. Each has one victory in the tournament, which came in 2015 when both advanced to the knockout stage. Colombia has registered a 1-4-2 record in Women’s World Cup history and South Korea is 1-8-1.

South Korea is led by veterans such as Cho So-hyun, 35, and Ji So-yun, 32, while 18-year-old Linda Caicedo could be the key for the Colombians.

Colombia is +20000 to win the World Cup in the Las Vegas odds and South Korea is +25000. Germany is the big favorite to win Group H (-2000) while Colombia is +1200 and South Korea +2000 in the live betting.

Colombians Tough On Attack

Colombia missed out on the 2019 World Cup, but have come back strong with a mix of talented young players and holdovers from its 2015 team that beat France and later lost 2-0 to the United States in the Round of 16.

Las Cafeteras qualified by reaching the 2022 Copa America final before losing 1-0 to powerful Brazil.

Colombia tied Panama (1-1) in June and recently played China to a 2-2 tie last Sunday.

Caicedo won the Golden Ball as the top player in Copa America and will be one of the players to watch in the tournament. She will have plenty of help on the attacking end from Mayra Ramirez, who had 14 goals and 11 assists in Liga F (Spain) this season.

Captain Danela Montoya, along with fellow veterans Lady Andrade and Catalina Usme, should also support Caicedo and Ramirez.

But much will depend on the Colombians’ ability to defend, which has been inconsistent at times. A clean sheet against South Korea would go a long way for their confidence.

South Korea Leans On Experience

South Korea had a rough time in the 2019 World Cup while being outscored 8-1 in losses to France, Nigeria and Norway.

The Taegeuk Ladies did not have much luck at the Arnold Clark Cup in England last February, but scored five goals each in back-to-back wins over Zambia in April and beat Haiti 2-1 on July 8 in another tune up.

Ji is the all-time leader in goals scored for South Korea (67) and is tied with Cho at 145 career caps. Lee Geum-min, Park Eun-sun and Cho also have at least 20 national team goals.

Most of South Korea’s defenders are at least 29-years-old and goalie Kim Jung-mi boasts 136 caps. But they did give up eight goals in the three games in England, which bodes well for the over at the sportsbook.

Casey Phair, a 16-year-old from New Jersey born to an American father and South Korean mother, is the teenager to watch for the Taegeuk Ladies.

Colombia vs South Korea Head-to-Head

It’s the first meeting for the two teams, who should make for an interesting contrast of styles.

Both teams have played Italy this year and lost by identical 2-1 scores.

In 2015, Colombia shocked France 2-0 in the first round and South Korea was beaten by the French 3-0 in the knockout phase. The South Koreans beat Spain 2-1 and drew with Costa Rica 2-2 in the 2015 tournament.

Colombia is 0-3-2 against China, Japan and North Korea in South Korea’s region. South Korea has been blanked by Colombia’s South American rival Brazil in two World Cup games.

Colombia vs South Korea Betting Lines

Colombia vs South Korea Picks and Prediction

Being the first game of the tournament for both, and with so much on the line, the teams could lean toward a conservative approach.

But if there’s an early goal or both teams avoid the mindset of playing “not to lose,” this game could open up. The bet here is that there are at least three goals scored and the young Colombians wear down the South Koreans.

If you are betting online, though, the result being a draw might not be a bad play at +225.

Colombia is listed at +135 in our Las Vegas soccer odds. This means that if you wager $100 on the Colombians, you have a chance to win $135. South Korea is +190, offering a chance to win $190 on a $100 wager.

The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives Colombia a 42.55% chance to win, with South Korea at 34.48%.
