Colorado Rapids vs Atlanta United

The Colorado Rapids finished atop the Western Conference last season. Allowing only one goal per game had a lot to do with that. Unfortunately for the Rapids, they couldn’t replicate that at the start of the new season, losing 3-0 to Los Angeles FC.

Now, the Rapids return home to welcome Atlanta United, our dark horse pick to dethrone New York City FC. The Five Stripes started on the right foot by beating Sporting Kansas City 3-1. However, they come in as the betting online underdogs at +240 for the matchup in Colorado.

Rapids Stronger at Home

Despite recent results, the Colorado Rapids deserve to control the soccer lines for this crucial matchup at +115. Yes, it’s only Fixture 2, but starting with two defeats could be devastating, especially after allowing three goals in the first one. Only the Vancouver Whitecaps allowed more goals in their opener with four.

Last season, the Rapids only lost one game at home, finishing with a 9-7-1 record, 31 goals for and 14 against. On the other hand, they lost six games on the road, allowing 21 goals. There’s something about Dick’s Sporting Goods Park that makes this team play better.

Also, keep in mind that several key players such as Diego Rubio and Michael Barrios didn’t start against LAFC. Head coach Robin Fraser decided to rest them after an intense series against Comunicaciones for the CONCACAF Champions League. Expect both to return to the starting lineup at full speed.

The match in Los Angeles also left some good news. Max Alves made his MLS debut while Bryan Acosta made his Rapids’ debut. The Honduras international played for FC Dallas from 2019 to 2021.

Having a deeper roster is something that Fraser really appreciates, especially with Braian Galvan set to miss several games after undergoing knee surgery.

Colorado Rapids projected lineup: William Yarbrough; Keegan Rosenberry, Lalas Abubakar, Danny Wilson, Auston Trusty, Lucas Esteves; Jack Price, Mark-Anthony Kaye, Max Alves; Diego Rubio, Michael Barrios.

Atlanta United: Very Tempting Underdog

Atlanta United proved, once again, that winning possession means nothing. Sporting KC won possession with 57 percent, but the Five Stripes were much more productive. They finished with six shots on target while Kansas City only had two.

Besides winning, Atlanta managed to control one of the best attacking units in the league. In fact, no other team in the Western Conference scored more goals than Sporting KC last season. Center back Miles Robinson had a lot to do with that. He controlled Daniel Salloi practically the whole match.

“Getting a multi-goal victory gave us confidence in everything we’ve been doing in preseason. It was a boost to see the hard work pay off and turn into results,” explained striker Tyler Wolff in an interview.

Offensively, Dom Dwyer had a dream debut. The veteran scored at the end of the first half after replacing Luiz Araujo, who suffered a hamstring injury. Araujo is expected to miss four weeks, giving Dwyer an incredible opportunity. Besides Dwyer and Wolff, United’s roster also includes Josef Martinez, so they’ll be fine.

The Five Stripes are offering a +240 price in the sportsbook. This will be the first time in the season that they come in as the underdog. Last week, they were favorites at -110. That shows the competitiveness of MLS.

Atlanta United projected lineup: Brad Guzan; George Campbell, Andrew Gutman, Miles Robinson, Ronald Hernandez; Ozzie Alonso, Matheus Rossetto, Amar Sejdic; Josef Martinez, Tyler Wolff, Dom Dwyer.

Colorado Rapids vs Atlanta United Head to Head

  • Previous Matches: 3
  • Colorado Rapids Victories: 0 (0 goals)
  • Atlanta United Victories: 3 (5 goals)
  • Draws: 0

Here’s another reason to consider Atlanta United such a tempting underdog to include in your soccer picks and soccer betting. They’ve never lost to the Colorado Rapids. They met for the last time in 2019 and the Five Stripes won 1-0 on a goal from Julian Gressel.

Their only meeting in Colorado finished 3-0. Josef Martinez contributed with one assist. Precisely, of the current team, only Martinez and Brad Guzan were starters at the time.

Colorado Rapids vs Atlanta United Prediction

The Colorado Rapids are so much better than the latest results indicate. We’re talking about a team that a few months ago reached the conference semifinals. Plus, after being eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions League, now they can fully focus on the MLS.

On the other hand, you won’t find a more motivated team than Atlanta United. Head coach Gonzalo Pineda has done a great job establishing a winning mentality. The Five Stripes only lost one of their last 11 games in all competitions.

For me, that’s the recipe for a very entertaining draw.

Score Prediction: Colorado Rapids 2, Atlanta United 2

Pick: Draw +260
