An MLS Cup Winners’ Battle
Two of the top teams of the last couple of MLS seasons meet In Ohio, as Columbus Crew SC opposes New York City FC. The Crew won the 2020 MLS Cup, City in 2021.
They’re the last two teams to lift the trophy. The Crew have taken a step back since winning it all, while City remains one of the best MLS teams.
Crew’s End to Unbeaten Streak
The Crew are one of the hottest non-top-seeded teams in the MLS over the last few weeks. They’re in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 30 points, with two games in hand over fifth- and seventh- seeds.
Before their last game, 2-1 loss against CF Montreal, the Crew were on a nine-game unbeaten stretch (game against Charlotte FC suspended due to rain). The Crew’s defense is a big part of the team’s success this season, which could make them a tough out in the playoffs.
They’ve surrendered just 24 goals, fourth fewest MLS total. Seven clean sheets are tied for fourth-best. Defense has given the Crew a platform for its recent success. Four clean sheets in the last 10, including against the Philadelphia Union, the top team in the East.
Continued City Dominance
In NYCFC’s title defense, they have proven why they won last season’s MLS Cup and may be en route to repeating. City enter their game with the Crew as one of four teams with 40-plus points on the season, and only one of three teams with a goal differential or greater than 20.
Large part of City’s dominance has come from being a ball-dominant team this season. In 22 games, it’s a 57.3% time of possession. That’s the third-best MLS total.
It’s that style of play which has allowed them to have a potent MLS offense, 1.86 goals per game. They’ve surrendered only 0.91 goals per game, the second-lowest number. A dozen clean sheets lead MLS teams.

Columbus Crew SC vs New York City FC Prediction
The Crew’s recent success, solid defense and playing at home should help against the City’s dominance this season. City lost their top goal scorer, Valentin Castellanos (loan to a La Liga team), while the Crew just signed a striker from the Premier League, Juan “Cucho” Hernandez.
