The Liga MX season has not been kind for Cruz Azul or Queretaro. Both are seemingly destined for relegation fines at the bottom of the table. They are tied for the most losses in the league.
With four points separating the bottom of the table from from 12th place and a spot in the next round, a win for either side has a chance to change their season. However, neither team has played well enough to prove they should be in the next round.

Cruz Azul: Devastating Loss
It is starting to look bleak for Cruz Azul as they have dropped to 17th place, second from the bottom. They have lost their last four games, two of them in massive blowouts.
In an astonishing rout against rival CF America, Azul lost 7-0 in their last game. The lopsided loss inflated Azul’s defensive numbers to 25 goals allowed and a goal differential of -13. Even if you take the seven goals out, Azul still has some of the worst defensive stats, going from the most goals allowed to second.
Azul’s attacking front does little to nothing to help the team and the only player to have scored more than one goal is no longer on the team. Santiago Gimenez moved on a transfer to Europe five games ago, and Azul has since scored four goals.
Queretaro: Continued Struggles
Queretaro is the lowest team on the table, with seven points. They were the last team to secure a win, only doing so two games ago against Tijuana.
While placing at the bottom of the table, their recent form has actually improved. After losing five of the first seven games, they have only one loss in their last four. Queretaro’s offense has improved a little recently, scoring half of all their five goals over the previous five games. Their defense, which has allowed the second-most goals in the league, only let in four over the recent stretch, giving them a positive goal differential of one.
The mini-run of decent form continued in their previous game, despite a loss against CF America. Unlike Azul, who got demolished in the game, Queretaro only lost 1-0. The loss ended Queretaro’s three-game unbeaten streak.
Cruz Azul vs Queretaro Head-to-Head
Cruz Azul has bested Queretaro in recent history, winning half of their last 28 meetings since 2010. In their previous three games, Azul has won by an aggregate score of 7-1.
The last Queretaro win was a 1-0 victory in 2020. They also won the previous meeting 3-0.
