After drawing their most recent matches, both DC United and the New York Red Bulls will be looking to pick up three points Sunday night.
Both teams are on the MLS Eastern Conference playoff bubble and could certainly use the points. DC United’s soccer betting odds of +115 imply a chance to win of 46.5 percent. The Red Bulls are listed at +245 to win and a draw is +230.
Game: DC United vs New York Red Bulls
Location: Audi Field, Washington, DC
Time: July 25, 8 p.m. ET
Head to Head
The Red Bulls and DC United split their matchups last season as both teams won on the road.
Prior to the first 2020 meeting, DC United was winless vs NYRB in 10 consecutive MLS matches. The Red Bulls had won five and drawn five during that span. Erik Sorga’s 98th-minute winner for DC United last September broke the streak.
DC United a Different Team with Hamid
After finishing 13th of 14 Eastern Conference teams last season, DC United has looked like an improved team this season. DC United could climb up the table as the season wears on, especially with GK Bill Hamid back.
Hamid missed seven games earlier in the season with a calf strain in which DC went 2-5 and its backups allowed 1.57 goals per 90 minutes. When Hamid has played, DC is 3-2-2 with three clean sheets.
Norwegian forward Ola Kamara has been excellent this season and averages 1.41 goals + assists per 90 minutes. He is DC’s designated penalty taker but even without penalty goals included he still averages a goal or assist each game. DC is also just weeks removed from a resounding 7-1 win over Toronto that got TFC coach Chris Armas fired.
Red Bulls Steadily Improving on the Road
The Red Bulls started off the season slowly. NY dropped four of its first six games and went 0-3 on the road. Since then, the Red Bulls’ only loss has come to the Eastern Conference’s best team, New England. The Red Bulls have also improved on the road, with just one loss in their last four matches away from home.
NY is capable of beating nearly anyone and has handed Eastern Conference powerhouse Orlando City two losses already this season.
The Red Bulls have played to consecutive 1-1 draws. The Red Bulls could have picked up just their second road win of the season vs Toronto FC on Wednesday but gave up a second-half lead. Patryk Klimala scored the only goal for NY.
Caden Clark is the joint top scorer on the Red Bulls, with four goals in eight starts. Since joining the Red Bulls in April, Klimala has already scored three goals and provided four assists.
The Red Bulls are dealing with their fair share of injuries. Star CB Aaron Long tore his Achilles in May, Daniel Royer and Andres Reyes are also out. Sean Nealis, who has made 11 starts this season is recovering from a thigh injury and was on the bench vs Toronto.
United’s Donovan Pines and Paul Arriola are on international duty at the Gold Cup and will miss the match. Key players Edison Flores and Brendan Hines-Ike are also out.
With all of the missing players and similar recent form and position in the standings, this one could be a toss up. I think DC United’s chances to win are decent but overstated. The best value I see in the BetUS sportsbook is the Red Bulls spread of +½ at -145. Take NY to cover.
