Dinamo Zagreb: Dirrefent club at home

The Croatian champions came through three qualifying rounds to book their spot among European football’s elite. They were drawn into Group E, together with Milan, Salzburg, and Chelsea. They are seen as underdogs in the quartet, potentially because they’ve needed to advance past Shkupi, Ludogorets Razgrad, and Bodo/Glimt to reach the group phase for the first time since 2019/20.

They did reach the 2020/21 Europa League quarterfinals, wins over West Ham United and Sevilla in last year’s competition. They did begin their domestic league with seven wins and a draw, atop the standings with 22 points (27 goals scored in the process).

They failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous 10 encounters across all of the competitions, but they’re rock-solid on home (unbeaten since December, 2021). Forward Mislav Orsic leads with five goals in eight appearances this season. There’s no injuries and suspensions. It will be tough for them to beat the Blues. We won’t include them in our soccer picks and parlays, but we expect them to find the back of the net.

Chelsea: Inconsistent

Chelsea secured a direct spot in the groups off a third-placed finish in the Premier League last season. The Blues won the competition in the 2020/21 campaign, but were unable to defend their title. They suffered a 5-4 defeat on aggregate to eventual champions Real Madrid.

Even by Chelsea’s standards, the summer transfer window was chaotic, resulting in them looking far from convincing during the opening fixtures. They had three wins (10 points) in six Premier League games, sixth in the EPL standings. They’ve failed to win two games in a row, returning to winning ways last out, 2-1 over West Ham in front of their fans.

Their latest transfer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, has been training individually after suffering a broken jaw during an armed robbery. He’s unlikely to start. Another new signing, Denis Zakaria, did not receive his work permit for the Blues’ Premier League game against West Ham United, and will only travel to Zagreb if that permit arrives. N’Golo Kante has been sidelined for a few weeks (injured thigh).

The substandard level of their defending means the Blues are expected to surrender at least a goal in Croatia. Chelsea’s conceded nine goals in six domestic fixtures. It would have been 10 had VAR not made what felt like a massive mistake in the West Ham clash. Chelsea’s failed to show a clinical touch on offense, but against Zagreb, they should be able to score at least twice. If you’re betting online, back the overs.

Dinamo Zagreb vs Chelsea Head-to-Head

During the eight seasons in which Dinamo Zagreb have reached the Champions League, they’ve managed to win just five matches out of a possible 42. Only two teams have a worse percentage. Chelsea has won 10 of their last 11 away matches in the Champions League, 16 of their previous 18 opening matches. Dinamo Zagreb have met London-based teams 11 times, with just three wins in the process. Hosts are unbeaten in their last 26 at home.

Dinamo Zagreb vs Chelsea Predictions

The visitors enter this clash as heavy favorites, priced at -220 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds. The goal line is set at 2½.

Dinamo Zagreb rarely loses at Maksimir Stadium. Chelsea’s not been convincing recently, but there’s a big difference in quality between the two squads. The Blues should start their UCL campaign with a win. Chelsea have continued to their reputation as possession hogs, though, They will control the tempo. They will impose their own rhythm. We can’t back them at that price, so we play the goals market.
