Turning Things Around
Prior to the start of the English Premier League season, Liverpool were the betting online favorites to dethrone Manchester City. Well, they still are, but they have had a very rough start, enough to already be five points behind the Citizens.
The thing is, the Reds are getting hot and beating Everton would officially put them on a winning streak. Having scored 11 goals in their last two games is the main reason for them to control the odds board at -255. Nevertheless, the Toffees must win ASAP, at least if they don’t want to fall into the relegation zone. Besides, it’s a derby, where anything can happen.
Everton: Better than 17th Place
Everton opened the season by putting up a good fight against Chelsea, but it wasn’t enough to pull off the stunner. The Toffees ended up losing 1-0 thanks to a penalty scored by Jorginho. One week later, they lost 2-1 to Aston Villa.
Then, Anthony Gordon began to make a difference. Yes, the Toffees are one of three teams that haven’t won, but at least they stopped losing. Starting on Matchday 3, their three EPL games have finished 1-1. Gordon scored in the last two.
Besides Gordon, Everton’s roster includes Demarai Gray, Dwight McNeil, Alex Iwobi, Conor Coady and Jordan Pickford, who’s one of England’s national team goalkeepers. Now you understand why they’re better than 17th place, but they must start proving it on the field.
Manager Frank Lampard thinks so too and promised the Toffees will get better. In the meantime, Lampard will keep experimenting. Last week’s game against Leeds United is a great example. The Toffees went from playing 3-4-3 to 4-3-3, which grants them more defensive stability.
That and the +675 price they’re offering in the sportsbook makes them a tempting underdog. Well, playing at Goodison Park also has a lot to do with that. Including last season’s final stretch, they only lost two of their last 10 home games and both were by only one goal.
Liverpool: Rising Like the Phoenix
We all know Liverpool are an exceptional team, but even exceptional teams have rough patches. Believe it or not, the Reds needed four games to get their first victory. The good news is that it was a historic one.
After drawing to Fulham (2-2) and Crystal Palace (1-1) and losing to Manchester United (2-1), they simply crushed Bournemouth 9-0 at Anfield. No, that’s not a typo, the game finished 9-0. In fact, the debacle got Bournemouth manager Scott Parker sacked.
Another piece of good news is that six different players scored and Mohamed Salah wasn’t one of them. That’s good because it was starting to look like the Reds depended a lot on him.
Most recently, also at home, Liverpool defeated Newcastle 2-1. This time, the Reds needed some extra time to figure things out. Alexander Isak scored the opener for the visitors while Roberto Firmino scored the equalizer. Later, when it seemed that the game would end in a draw, Fabio Carvalho saved the day at the 98th minute with a lucky strike.
Those two victories allowed the Reds to climb up to fifth place and defeating Everton could boost them up to third.
One last piece of good news. Darwin Nunez, the team’s new shining star, will return after missing the last three games due to suspension. That’s just in case you needed another reason to include them in your soccer picks.
Everton vs Liverpool Head-to-Head
- Previous Matches: 238
- Everton Victories: 67 (265 goals)
- Liverpool Victories: 95 (332 goals)
- Draws: 76
Last season, Liverpool won both EPL matches between the two. First, they visited Goodison Park and won 4-1. Salah was named Man of the Match after scoring a brace. Later, the Reds won 2-0 at Anfield with goals scored by Andrew Robertson and Divock Origi. The referee ended up showing seven yellow cards, in total, in both meetings. I told you, anything can happen during a derby.
The Toffees only won one of their last 10 encounters with the Reds (1-5-4), but they’ve always put up a good fight. The proof of that is that the total went under in seven of those last 10 meetings.

Everton vs Liverpool Prediction
Anything can happen during a derby, especially when both teams are in a must-win situation. Liverpool needs to keep winning in order to get back in the title race. Everton needs to win in order to avoid falling into the relegation zone, which would increase the pressure considerably.
Expect both teams to go all-in right from the start, and as a consequence, we’ll enjoy a goal-fest. Liverpool’s depth on offense is simply insane, and that will make the difference. They scored two or more goals in four of the last six meetings between the two. With Nunez back and Salah eager to score, I recommend you include the Reds’ total going over in your soccer betting ticket.
Score Prediction: Liverpool 3, Everton 1
