Expect Scot-Free Opener for Germany at Euro 2024

Since making their debut in 1972, Germany have won three European Championships, the joint-most alongside Spain. If they are to come away with their first Euros title in 28 years, they will need to start the tournament with a convincing victory against Scotland on Friday. We’re backing Germany (-353) to kick off Euro 2024 with three points as they host Scotland (+924) in Munich.

Germany to Run the Show in Munich

Germany have suffered a decade of consistently disappointing performances since their 2014 World Cup win, but it seems that they are finally waking up. The arrival of Julian Nagelsmann – one of Europe’s most promising managers – has breathed fresh new air into a Germany side that had been struggling for an identity under Hansi Flick.

The return of Toni Kroos has given the German side a new purpose. Having previously retired from international football, the Real Madrid midfield maestro is back for one last dance before he hangs up his boots, and he should provide Germany with the control and precision that they have been lacking.

Similarly to in 2014, it seems that the German side has coincided with a Bundesliga that has peaked in quality – between Borussia Dortmund reaching the Champions League Final, Stuttgart finishing second and Bayer Leverkusen coming within inches of an undefeated treble, there is plenty of domestic talent for Nagelsmann to choose from.

Outside of those teams, Jamal Musiala remains a decisive playmaker who’s capable of slithering past a sea of defenders and advancing into a goal-scoring position whilst Antonio Rudiger has arguably been the finest center back in football this season. All in all, Germany look primed to make a deep run on home soil.

They should have more than enough firepower to sink a Scotland side that is missing key players like Lyndon Dykes, Aaron Hickey and Lewis Ferguson and that is devoid of an elite goal-scorer. Scotland have conceded 2+ goals in seven of their last nine matches whilst they also lost 1-0 to Northern Ireland in March. We’re backing Germany to win, and we’re backing this match to feature over 1.5 goals at -210 in our parlay bets.

Fulkrug to the Rescue for Germany?

One week after facing off in the UEFA Champions League Final, Rudiger and Niclas Fulkrug were involved in a heated training ground altercation, with the two men pushing each other and nearly coming to blows. Whilst Rudiger is guaranteed to start in defense, it remains to be seen whether or not Nagelsmann will start Kai Havertz up top or go with a more traditional option like Fulkrug at the center forward.

No matter what, however, Fulkrug will play a vital role for Die Mannschaft this season. One of the few shining lights of their putrid 2022 World Cup campaign, the BVB striker has scored 11 goals and two assists in 16 appearances despite often having to come off the bench for Die Mannschaft.

A late bloomer, Fulkrug only made his Germany debut in November 2022, but at 31, he looks set to provide the goods for Nagelsmann’s side this summer. We’re backing him to make his mark in our Euro 2024 betting picks.

Best Bets for Germany vs Scotland:

Germany to win and over 1.5 goals (-210); Niclas Fulkrug anytime scorer (+160)

Questions of the Day

Which player is likely to register multiple shots on target in the Euros?

Niclas Fulkrug has what it takes to cause Scotland’s defense some serious headaches with his physical prowess and hold-up play, and we’re backing him to test Angus Gunn in goal.

Can Germany score 2+ goals vs. Scotland?

Scotland have failed to keep a clean sheet in eight of their last nine, and they are expected to struggle against Germany’s high-powered arsenal.
