FC Koln: Ups and downs
After pulling off two upsets and picking up four points against Leverkusen and Dortmund, Koln was beaten 1-0 away at Union Berlin last Friday. However, they remain in the hunt to qualify for Europe next season, as they currently sit eighth in the Bundesliga table, four points behind Hoffenheim in sixth and five points behind fifth-placed Freiburg.
The hosts are known for their good home record but they enter this clash on the back of three winless home games. Let’s be honest and note that during this run they played teams such as Bayern Munich, Dortmund, and Hoffenheim.
After surviving the relegation play-off last year, the hosts appear to be heading upwards under their new head coach Steffen Baumgart. The circumspection of FC Koln’s players is never going to be matched by the fans. Cologne, as a city, never needs much encouragement to be swept up in a wave of optimism but there are reasons for observers beyond the faithful to believe in their teams this season. Baumgart’s intensive work on the training pitch is paying off. He transformed the team from fighting to avoiding the drop in fighting for the European spots.
In front of their fans, FC Koln is another animal. The players are giving everything on the pitch: they press high and move the ball with a belief in the power of possibility. They should have enough to beat Mainz on Saturday and maintain the pressure on the top spots. That’s why we will include them in our Soccer picks and parlays.
The hosts will be without center-back Timo Hubers and midfielder Jan Thielmann, who will both serve one-match suspensions after picking up their fifth yellow card of the season during the last round.
Mainz: Horrendous on the road
Mainz’s hopes of securing European football for next season are almost over, as they have won only one of their last five Bundesliga matches, a run of form which has seen them slip out of the top half of the table. A 1-1 draw away at Gladbach last weekend was followed by a 2-1 away defeat against Augsburg in the midweek fixture. Still, they are just two points behind their weekend’s opponents with six rounds to go till the end of the season, so they still have chances to finish in the top six but they need a perfect finish.
They are now heading for their third successive away domestic clash and they will be looking to end their nine-game winless run on the road, dating back to October 30 last year. Only bottom-placed and the worst team in the European top five leagues, Greuther Furth, has earned fewer points than Svensson’s men away from home this season. If you’re betting online you should always pay attention to the form of the team you’re about to bet on.
Mainz’s only injury concern is with center-back Jerry St Juste, who continues to recover from a shoulder problem. Newly-capped Germany international Anton Stach will be hoping to force his way back into the first XI ahead of either Dominik Kohr or Lee Jae-Sung in the middle on the pitch.
FC Koln vs Mainz Head-to-Head
There’s not a lot to separate these two teams in terms of head-to-head record. They both won three of their previous nine games, with three games ending in draws. We’ve seen both teams contributing on the scoreboard in six of their previous seven mutual encounters with four of these games finishing with at least three goals. The reverse match ended in a 1-1 draw with both sides canceling each other. As we previously stated, Mainz has the second-worst away form of the season with just eight points picked up in 14 games while FC Koln enjoys playing in front of their fans and earned 25 points in 14 home games, scoring 21 goals in the process.

FC Koln vs Mainz Prediction
As expected, the hosts enter this clash as slight favorites being priced at +140 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest Soccer odds while the goal line is set at 2½.
Given Mainz’s disastrous away form, we tend to go for a home win, however, because these two teams are not consistent we will go with the safer approach. The last time Mainz managed to beat FC Koln on the road in the German Bundesliga was last season in a thrilling 3-2 victory with the winning goal being scored during injury time. The win before that was in 2003, 19 years ago.
There’s not a lot to separate these two teams and we expect both of them to find the back of the net. Mainz conceded at least two goals in five of their previous seven away fixtures and we expect this trend to continue on Saturday.
