Southampton vs West Ham United 2022 FA Cup Fifth Round

Premier League Foes Set to Clash

Unlike most domestic Side-B tournaments, winning the FA Cup is a big deal. Besides getting a fancy trophy, the winner also gets a ticket for the Group Stage of the UEFA Europa League. That implies more exposure and more income.

In the fifth round, there will be only two matchups between English Premier League teams. Southampton hosting West Ham promises to be a roller coaster of emotions. The visitors are having a great season but come in as the soccer betting underdogs at +170.

Southampton Unbeaten in Last 11 at Home

Southampton hasn’t lost in its last six domestic games. That’s something not even Manchester City can say. Most recently, the Saints defeated Norwich 2-0 with goals from Che Adams and Oriol Romeu.

Adams is the team’s top scorer with eight goals in all competitions. He’s followed by Armando Broja with six and James Ward-Prowse with five. All three have a lot to do with Southampton being the betting online favorite at +130.

The Saints’ non-losing streak includes draws to Manchester City and Manchester United and a huge 3-2 victory over Tottenham. We’re talking about three of the best teams in the region.

Regarding the FA Cup, Southampton defeated Swansea 3-2 in the third round and Coventry City 2-1 in the fourth. They came from behind in both games, winning in overtime. That shows we’re also talking about a very resilient team.

That’s especially true when the Saints play at St Mary’s Stadium, where they haven’t lost in their last 11 games. Their record during that span is 6-5-0, scoring in each game. This is one of those cases in which playing at home really increases the team’s online gambling value.

Nathan Tella and Alex McCarthy remain out due to injury, but the rest of the team is ready to go. Southampton’s projected lineup: Fraser Foster; Tino Livramento, Jan Bednarek, Mohamed Salisu, Kyle Walker-Peters; Stuart Armstrong, James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Mohamed Elyounoussi; Che Adams, Armando Broja.

West Ham Aiming High

The Hammers are having a great season, currently sitting in fifth place in the EPL. They also qualified for the Europa League Round of 16 after winning Group H with a 4-1-1 record, 11 goals for and only three against.

They haven’t lost in their last four games. Most recently, they defeated Wolverhampton 1-0 thanks to a goal from Tomas Soucek. The Wolves won possession with 61 percent but only made one shot on target. The Hammers made four.

West Ham already eliminated an EPL from the current edition of the FA Cup, defeating Leeds United 2-0 in the third round. In the fourth round, they suffered more than expected but beat Kidderminster Harriers 2-1. The Hammers scored at 90+1 and 120+1.

Overall, they own a 3-1-1 record in their last five road games. They scored two or more goals in four of those games. We’re talking about a team that maintains its essence even when playing away from home. You won’t find a more tempting underdog to include in your soccer picks.

West Ham’s projected lineup: Lukasz Fabianski; Ben Johnson, Craig Dawson, Kurt Zouma, Aaron Cresswell; Tomas Soucek, Declan Rice, Pablo Fornals, Said Benrahma, Arthur Masuaku; Michail Antonio.

Southampton vs West Ham Prediction

West Ham is the better team, no doubt about it, but they have several players are out. The list includes Andriy Yarmolenko, Vladimir Coufal, Arthur Masuaku, Angelo Ogbonna and Ryan Frederick.

Plus, the Hammers depend only on themselves to finish the EPL season in the top five. That would grant them a ticket for the UEL or the UCL. Winning the FA Cup is Southampton’s best chance to qualify for a UEFA competition.

Score Prediction: Southampton 2, West Ham United 1
