Lazio travels to play Verona on Sunday in what should be the most entertaining game of the round in the Italian top-flight league, while Fiorentina is expected to return to its winning ways against visiting Cagliari. Our sportsbook is offering a great price for this two-leg parlay.
Verona vs Lazio: Must-Watch
Eusebio Di Francesco became the first managerial casualty of the Serie A season, getting sacked after just three rounds with his team losing all its games. Di Francesco has not lasted a full season during spells with Sampdoria, Cagliari and now Verona. They immediately found a good replacement for the experienced manager, signing Igor Tudor, a fresh coach who returns in the Serie A after being part of Andrea Pirlo’s staff at Juventus last season.
Since Igor took charge, Verona improved with every week. They beat AS Roma (3-2) and Spezia (4-0) and were were held to draws by Salernitana (2-2) and Genoa (3-3), respectively. They lost last weekend on the road 3-2 to AC Milan after leading 2-0 at halftime. They were very unlucky not to win at least one point against the Rossoneri.
Now they will play host to Lazio on Sunday and of course they are underdogs, given Lazio’s brilliant firepower, being priced at +210 with the latest Serie A odds. On the other side, Lazio has a poor record on the road winning, just one in four Serie A games and conceding seven goals in the process.
On top of that, they have European commitments and they are playing Marseille in Europa League, so they just have two days to recover and prepare for Sunday’s clash. Given Verona’s goal-scoring form and Lazio’s struggles away from home, we expect a high-scoring affair. So, for our first pick of the parlay we are going with over 2½ goals. We might be in for an upset here so we will sprinkle a small stake on Verona +½ at -140.
Pick: Over 2½ goals (-140)
Fiorentina vs Cagliari: Home Win
Cagliari is in the same situation as Verona. They’ve relieved Leonardo Semplici of his duties after just three rounds of the new season, just a few hours after Verona sacked Di Francesco. They’ve appointed Walter Mazzarri as their new manager with a three-year contract. He has huge Serie A experience, collecting 462 games in the Italian top-flight league.
Despite Mazzarri’s strong personality and offensive style, the results are still not the ones expected. They did manage to win their first match last weekend, beating Sampdoria 3-1 in front of their fans.
Cagliari has the same problem as many small teams in Europe. They rely too much on one player, Brazilian midfielder/striker Joao Pedro. He scored six of Cagliari’s 11 goals, offering two assists in the process. Let’s just imagine Cagliari without him because the season is very long and players might get injured or suspended for yellow/red cards. Given their struggles they are priced at +350 on the three-way money line with the best Serie A odds.
On the other side, Fiorentina suffered a 1-0 defeat against Serie A strugglers Venezia, and after two defeats in a row it’s safe to say they are desperate to return to winning ways. There are some international issues to be fixed there. President Rocco Commisso announced that striker Dusan Vlahovic would not renew his contract with the Tuscans and a group of traveling fans insulted the striker at the Stadio Penzo when players went to salute their supporters.
At the end of the day, Vlahovic’s performance remains top-notch and he’s not affected by the criticism from the fans or management. Even manager Vincenzo Italiano said that Vlahovic fought hard and helped the team to improve. After two defeats in a row, it’s time for Fiorentina to bounce back and win in front of their fans. Also, Vlahovic will bring his A game, try to score and redeem himself in front of his supporters. Not the most attractive odds for a home win but perfect for a parlay bet.
