England was among the favorites to win the Euro 2020 from the start. Not only have they met expectations, but they’ve done so with impressive numbers. The “Three Lions” have never won the Euro, so far, with their best result a third-place finish in 1996.
Italy wasn’t among the favorites to win the title, but they were one of the top dark horses. Head coach Roberto Mancini has done a great job with a mix of experienced and young players. “La Nazionale” is on the verge of winning their first Euro title since 1968.

Italy and England last met in a friendly match in 2018. The game, also held at Wembley, finished 1-1 with goals from Jamie Vardy and Lorenzo Insigne. Vardy’s not playing the Euro 2020, Insigne is and he already has scored two goals.
This will be their third meeting during a European Championship. Italy won 1-0 in 1980 and 4-2 (penalty shootout) in 2012. In fact, England has never beaten Italy in an official competition. The “Squadra Azzurra” also defeated them in the 1990 and 2014 World Cup.
A game between Italy and England hasn’t ended with a goalless draw since 2012. Since then, they’ve played four matches, and both sides scored at least one goal in each game.
Why Bet on Italy?
Despite being considered a defensive team, Italy’s the second-highest scoring team in the tournament with 12 goals. That doesn’t mean they haven’t done a great defensive job. Italy has conceded only three goals in six games.
They won Group A with a 3-0-0 record, nine goals for and yielded none. They defeated Austria 2-1 in the Round of 16, Belgium 2-1 in the Round of 8, and most recently played Spain to a 1-1 draw (4-2 in penalty shootout) in the semifinal.
“We are pleased to have given this joy to Italians everywhere. We wanted to get to the final, even if not many people believed we would before the start of the tournament,” said Mancini to the press.
Italy is on an impressive hot streak. They’ve played 33 straight games without losing. Since Mancini took over in 2018, they’ve lost only two games (28-8-2). Regarding the Euro, including the qualifiers, they’re 15-1-0. They also are 7-0-0 on the road, 7-0 against the spread and over/under.
This is a very well-balanced team. Italy’s second in total shot attempts with 108. They also are second in clean sheets with three. Offensively, Ciro Immobile, Insigne and Federico Chiesa are lethal. Defensively, Gianluigi Donnarumma has become one of the best goalkeepers in the region.
Jorginho deserves some praise as well. The midfielder has become Italy’s heart. He might not be flashy, but he’s effective.
No major injuries to report here. Their expected lineup is Gianluigi Donnarumma; Alessandro Florenzi, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Spinazzola; Nicolo Barella, Jorginho, Manuel Locatelli; Domenico Berardi, Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile.
Why Bet on England?
I have to admit it, “Football’s coming home” is quite catchy. England hasn’t won a major tournament since 1966. Maybe they need the tournament to be at home, which is where the Grand Finale will be.
That’s one of the reasons why England comes in as the sports betting favorite, but there’s more. They won Group D with a 2-1-0 record, two goals for and none against. They then beat Germany (2-0), Ukraine (4-0) and, most recently, Denmark (2-1).
“We’ve got to enjoy the fact we’re in the final but there’s one more massive hurdle to conquer. Italy is a very good side; I’ve thought that for the last couple of years. They are in outstanding form and have defensive warriors who have been through everything. It’s a great game to look forward to,” said England head coach Gareth Southgate.
England’s also a very well-balanced team. Defensively, they lead the competition with five clean sheets. Offensively, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden can produce a headache to any defense.
Including the qualifiers, England owns a 12-1-1 record, including 7-1-0 at home. They also are 5-1-2 against the spread and 5-3 over/under. Only one of England’s games during the tournament wasn’t at Wembley. They crushed Ukraine in Rome.
The whole roster is ready to go. Their expected lineup is Jordan Pickford; Kyle Walker, John Stones, Harry Maguire; Luke Shaw, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, Kieran Trippier; Phil Foden, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling.
Final Analysis, Predictions
Expect a showdown. Italy’s eager to win a major tournament to prove they’re back among the elite. England’s eager to win in order to reduce the pressure and finally take advantage of a very talented generation.
Playing at home, England should take control of the ball from the start. You can expect Italy to play more on the counterattack, at least the first 15 minutes. Italy doesn’t need too many chances to capitalize in front of a goal. Scoring first would put more pressure on England’s shoulders.
There has been no better underdog in the tournament than Italy in the Grand Finale.
