Argentina Slightly Favored
Years ago, there was the Intercontinental Cup. It was a matchup between the UEFA Champions League winner and the Copa Libertadores winner. You know, to determine who was the real boss. Well, the 2022 Finalissima between Argentina and Italy on Wednesday is basically the same, but with national teams involved.
Argentina, which won the Copa America for the first time since 1993, dominates the soccer odds at +170. Having Lionel Messi still makes the difference. Not so fast, though. Italy pulled off several stunners on the road to the European 2020 championship.
Italy Missing Top Scorer
For Italy, this is the last preparation match toward the UEFA Nations League. The Azzurri are part of the Group of Death alongside England, Germany, and Hungary. After facing Argentina on Wednesday, the Italians take on Germany on Saturday.
Italy pulled off several stunners on the road to the European championship. After winning Group A with a 3-0-0 record, seven goals for and none against, the Azzurri eliminated Belgium and Spain. In the Grand Finale, they defeated England. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was the Man of the Match, especially during the penalty shootout.
Precisely, Donnarumma remains the team’s leader, especially with Ciro Immobile out. The Serie A top scorer with 27 goals will miss the match due to injury. Domenico Berardi and Andrea Pinamonti are also out. Nicolo Zaniolo, who recently won the UEFA Conference League with AS Roma, will be the top striker.
Since Roberto Mancini took over in 2018, Italy owns a 31-13-4 record. At some point, the Azzurri went 37 straight games, in all competitions, without losing. That’s a world record. The thing is, they didn’t qualify for the 2022 World Cup, losing in the playoff to North Macedonia. Therefore, winning the Finalissima and the Nations League is all they’ve left.
The Azzurri are offering a +200 price in the sportsbook to win straight up. If you wager $100 on them and they pull off the upset, your payout would be $300.
Argentina: Nothing to Worry About
For Argentina, this is the first preparation game for the 2022 World Cup. The tournament in Qatar seems like the last chance for Messi to win the big one. Therefore, Messi and all superstars agreed to forfeit their vacations to face Italy. Chemistry isn’t built overnight.
La Albiceleste is highly motivated after winning their first major title in almost 30 years. They won Group A with a 3-1-0 record, seven goals for and only two against. Later, they eliminated Ecuador and Colombia. Finally, they defeated Brazil in the championship game.
They kept the rhythm during the World Cup qualifiers. In fact, they finished the road to Qatar 2022 undefeated (11-6-0). Only Brazil finished with better numbers.
Besides Messi, Argentina’s attacking unit includes Lautaro Martinez, who finished the Serie A season with 21 goals, along with Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala. Both are looking for a new club, which means they’ll try to make a good impression.
Argentina comes in as the betting online favorite at a +170 price. In this case, also based on a $100 wager, your payout could be $270. That’s a great deal considering only Leandro Paredes is out due to injury.

Italy vs Argentina Prediction
Italy is the better team when it comes to defending. Argentina is the better team when it comes to attacking. If I had to sum it up, I think Donnarumma vs. Messi is the perfect way to do it. As if that wasn’t enough, they know each other pretty well as they’re teammates at PSG. Therefore, I expect this to be a close contest. Both sides will score, but not enough for the total to go over. Not enough to win in regulation time, either. The football prediction is a draw and the Azzurri will win in penalties.
Score Prediction: Italy 1, Argentina 1
Pick: Draw (+195)
