Clash of Titans in Champions League

Liverpool Can Advance to Round of 16 by Beating Atletico Madrid

I’m not sure there’s a team capable of beating Liverpool right now. Nevertheless, if someone asked me to choose the best candidate, it would be Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s defensive system tends to desperate the opponent and then they go for the kill on the counterattack.

Expect quite a show, equal to or better than the one they did at Wanda Metropolitano. Let’s check the latest news, stats, injury reports, and soccer lines for Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid. We’ve plenty of predictions for you to consider.

Head to Head

  • Previous Matches: 8
  • Liverpool Victories: 2 (9 goals)
  • Atletico Madrid Victories: 3 (10 goals)
  • Draws: 3

The first leg was a thriller. Liverpool went to Madrid and won 3-2 with Mohamed Salah (who else?) as the Man of the Match after scoring twice. Antoine Griezmann scored both Atletico’s goals, but he also got a red card.

If there’s something you can expect from these two, it’s goals. Both sides scored in six of their previous eight meetings while the total went over 2½ goals in three of them. Curiously enough, Atletico won 3-2 the last time they visited Anfield.

Scoring Machine

Liverpool has scored 29 goals in 10 English Premier League games. No other team has scored more. The Reds have also scored 11 goals in three UCL games. Only Bayern Munich has scored more.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has done a great job balancing the workloads, making them a competitive side no matter who plays. Yes, Salah has been sensational, but let’s not forget about Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones. It’s like an Ultimate Team from FIFA.

Defensively, Klopp has had some trouble finding the perfect companion for Virgil van Dijk. Nevertheless, if they can keep scoring 3.07 goals per game, they should be fine. Besides, Van Dijk has been great despite missing all last season due to injury.

Beating the Reds at Anfield isn’t easy, but they’re not perfect. Including the EPL and the UCL, their home record is 3-3-0. They also are 2-2-2 against the spread and 3-2-1 over/under. They haven’t lost in four consecutive matches in this tournament.

Having a depth roster is what allows Liverpool to remain as the betting online favorites as several players are out/doubtful. The list includes Fabinho, Naby Keita, James Milner, and Harvey Elliott.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy

Not having Griezmann is a low blow, but Atletico Madrid has the best roster in Spain. No, I’m not kidding. Even with Griezmann out, Simeone can put together a very competitive, aggressive side, including Luis Suarez, Joao Felix, and Koke.

Atletico already won at San Siro, meaning they aren’t afraid of anything or anyone. Including La Liga and the UCL, they own a 4-1-1 record when playing on the road. They also are 4-2 against the spread and 5-1 over/under. If you were looking for an underdog to include in your soccer picks, look no further.

“There is no revenge, this match will have other consequences. The three games ahead of us are decisive for all four teams in the group. Every team has to compete to the best of their abilities; all four have the same chance,” said Simeone during a press conference.

He’s not wrong, but losing at Anfield will diminish their chances considerably. They simply can’t afford to lose or AC Milan and Porto will be back in the race for second place.

Stefan Savic is also out due to suspension while Marcos Llorente and Thomas Lemar are out due to injury. That shouldn’t affect Atletico’s plan, which heavily relies on the counterattack. Luis Suarez should have a huge game. He has scored seven goals between La Liga and the UCL.

Final Analysis, Predictions

I expect another scoring frenzy. Liverpool want to seal its Round of 16 tickets as soon as possible, while Atletico doesn’t want things to be complicated. I’m not seeing Liverpool losing. However, if Brighton could get a draw at Anfield last weekend, Atletico should be able to do it as well.

Our football prediction is drawn at +310 and the total goes over at -130. Don’t forget to check the props we’re offering for this and other games to increase your winning chances. Our score prediction is offering a +1400 price, while four exact total goals are +450. If you want to mix things even more, go with 31-40 minutes for the first goal at +600. Between these two, the second half tends to be better.

Score Prediction: Liverpool 2, Atletico Madrid 2

Pick: Draw (+310)
