Portland Timbers Hit the Road Seeking First Victory
An Inspired Los Angeles FC Awaits
The Portland Timbers started the MLS season with a draw against the New England Revolution. I hope you took our advice because that was our prediction. Some might think it was a bad result because Portland was playing at home. However, don’t forget that New England is the betting online favorite to win it all.
Now, the Timbers face another team included in the list of top candidates to dethrone New York City FC. Plus, after a great victory in Fixture 1, Los Angeles FC aims for the Western Conference top spot. The home side controls the odds board thanks to a -175 price.
Los Angeles FC Trust in Carlos Vela
What a great start for Carlos Vela. The Mexican led Los Angeles FC to a 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids by scoring a hat-trick. After missing much of last season, Vela looks better than ever. Have no doubt that he’s going to be fighting for the Golden Boot.
But it wasn’t just Vela, the whole team had a great game. LAFC made seven shots on target, while Colorado only made one. Recently signed goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau proved to be a great leader. He didn’t stop talking to the whole defensive unit throughout the match. This was the third straight year in which LAFC has opened the season with a home shutout victory.
Midfielder Ilie Sanchez, also recently signed, was selected for the MLS Team of the Week alongside Vela. I’m telling you; this team has talent to spare.
Four players remain questionable due to injury: Ismael Tajouri, Erik Duenas, Julian Gaines, and Eddie Segura. Nevertheless, the team is so motivated that I don’t think they will miss them.
LAFC has never collected fewer than four points from its first two games of a season. Based on that, the worst-case scenario is a draw, which is offering a +330 price in the sportsbook.
Los Angeles FC projected lineup: Maxime Crepeau; Franco Escobar, Jesus Murillo, Mamadou Fall, Diego Palacios; Kellyn Acosta, Ilie Sanchez, Jose Cifuentes; Kwadwo Opoku, Carlos Vela, Brian Rodriguez.
Portland Timbers Showed Resilience
The Portland Timbers not only drew against a great team but also came from behind twice. The New England Revolution opened the can at the end of the first half. Fifteen minutes into the second one, Dairon Asprilla evened the score. Three minutes later, New England scored again, but Yimmi Chara saved the day with an amazing bicycle kick.

The Timbers won possession with 55%. That’s not easy when you’re facing such a talented midfield, including Carles Gil, the league’s MVP.
Keep in mind that Portland put up a good fight even with Felipe Mora and Sebastian Blanco out. Last season, Mora was the team’s top scorer with 11 goals, while Blanco scored seven. Mora won’t be back for a while, but Blanco is expected to return soon. Meanwhile, some young, talented players will get their opportunity.
“I’m very content to see how the younger guys have been able to step in, like Moreno, like Bravo, Paredes. These players are still developing and still are getting better,” said head coach Giovanni Savarese in an interview.
Besides the fact that we’re talking about last season’s runners-up, Portland won six of their last eight road games. That also makes them a tempting underdog to include in your soccer picks, especially at +440.
Portland Timbers projected lineup: Aljaz Ivacic; Josecarlos Van Rankin, Zac McGraw, Bill Tuiloma, Claudio Bravo; Diego Chara, Cristhian Paredes, Santiago Moreno, Dairon Asprilla; Jaroslaw Niezgoda, Yimmi Chara.

Los Angeles FC vs Portland Timbers Prediction
Not to discredit Los Angeles FC, but Colorado was bummed out after being eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions League. This Sunday, they’ll face a much tougher opponent in what I expect will be a fast-paced match.
Both will score, but the total won’t go over. That’s why I recommend you include the draw in your soccer betting ticket.
Score Prediction: Los Angeles FC 1, Portland Timbers 1
Pick: Draw at +330
