Lyon: Amazing record in Europe

Lyon has won just one of their last six fixtures across all competitions and sits a lowly 10th in their domestic league, a massively disappointing season for them. Surprisingly, that was not the case in European competitions. The Europa League is their one shot at qualifying for Europe next season, so their eggs are firmly in this basket.

Peter Bosz’s side enters this clash having just played out another draw in Ligue 1 with surprise package Strasbourg, but that result certainly came at a cost as no fewer than three key players were forced off injured. The hosts are monitoring injury doubts over Tanguy Ndombele, Houssem Aouar and goalkeeper Antony Lopes.

Lyon side has plenty of individual quality that can hurt West Ham, but we don’t expect them to go all-in during the second leg. They will probably have a more conservative approach and wait for the opponent’s mistakes. Still waiting for their first taste of victory in the Europa League in its current format, Lyon’s spot in a semifinal for the first time since 2017 is far from guaranteed. They must put on a great fight and try not to leave many spaces at the back. Between the two sides, Lyon is the more creative one, fully packed with skillful and amazing one-on-one players.

If you’re Soccer betting you should know that soccer is a three-way betting sport. We also have the draw and when you can’t separate the two sides, you go for the draw, which 95 percent of the time has the better value.

West Ham: Poor on the road

The West Ham players need to head to Lyon in a confident mood, knowing that they can beat the Ligue 1 outfit. The ref’s decision to hand Aaron Cresswell a red card in the first leg was an absolute shocker. It was a huge blow at the time but perhaps it will generate a siege mentality in the West Ham players.

West Ham needed no second invitation to make their feelings known following Cresswell’s sending off, losing last weekend’s Premier League clash with Brentford, which added more pressure on them. At the end of the day, they are professional players, but two negative results in a row will definitely affect their confidence.

With no away goals rule, West Ham must win to guarantee their progression within regular time. David Moyes praised his players’ attitude in the second half, saying that they showed resilience with 10 men and managing not to lose the game. Having to face Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City before the Premier League season concludes does not spell optimism for West Ham’s Champions League hopes, so winning the Europa League is the only way to play in UCL next season. With their poor away form, it’s very tough to back West Ham, so we won’t include them in our  Soccer picks and parlays.

Lyon vs West Ham Head-to-Heads

West Ham has been knocked out from Europe on each of the last three occasions that they have failed to win a knockout leg at home. Looking for their first European semifinal appearance since 1976, the Hammers can take some comfort from knowing that they’ve advanced from three of their four previous European quarterfinal ties. The visitors lost their previous three away European fixtures, failing to find the back of the net. Lyon is one of the two sides who began the Europa League in the Group Stage that has yet to lose, winning six of nine games.

Lyon vs West Ham Predictions

The hosts enter this clash as slight favorites at +110 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest Soccer odds while the goal line is set at 2½.

We expect a cagey game between two sides that are missing some of their most important players and who know that the game is 90 minutes long and they also have extra time and penalties at their disposal to qualify further in the competition. This kind of match will be decided by a moment of magic or an error, in a dramatic way. It will be nervy, with the two sides expected to cancel each other and not offer many spaces at the back.

Neither team will want to play all on the front foot at risk of getting exposed, so the under 2½ goals is the best possible bet. Neither team has been prolific in the finals third and that, along with the increased stakes of the game, should see very few chances created in a low-scoring contest.

  • Pick: Under 2½ goals (-125)
