Mainz: Impressive Start

Mainz have looked good so far, securing two victories and a draw across their opening three games to find themselves in one of the Champions League spots at the moment. It’s too soon to talk about a top-four finish but Mainz, who finished eighth last term, is eager to play in Europe next season. With seven points from three matches, Mainz has their best start to a Bundesliga campaign in four years.

Their most recent outing came against Augsburg, which saw Karim Onisiwo give them the lead, and even though it got cut back, Mainz still took all three points after a last-minute winner from Lee Jae-Sung. Once again, Onisiwo is their top scorer with three goals scored. Last season, the squad was only defeated twice at home, showcasing their ability to create a hostile atmosphere in order to pick up positive results.

They missed out on a European spot by only six points but they managed to keep their spine of players, losing only Moussa Niakhate to Nottingham and Jeremiah St. Juste to Sporting. They were able to add some extra quality in the summer transfer window, bringing Angelo Fulgini from Angers, Maxim Leitsch from Bochum and Marcus Ingvartsen from Union Berlin. If you’re betting online, Mainz is one of the teams to back when playing in front of their fans.

Leverkusen: Horror Start

It’s only the second time that Leverkusen has lost their opening three games of a Bundesliga season. It last happened in 2018-19, when they still finished the campaign in fourth. They also went out of the DFB Pokal, losing to third-tier league club Elversberg.

Despite their disastrous start, Leverkusen CEO Fernando Caro gave his backing to manager Gerardo Seoane. Sporting director Simon Rolfes refused to rule out further signings in the final week of the summer transfer window. In the meantime, Seoane is expected to keep faith with Sardar Azmoun, Moussa Diaby, Patrik Schick and new addition Adam Hlozek as part of an attacking line that’s scored a league-low one goal this term.

Schick is yet to find the net, but the Czech striker has two goals in three games against Mainz. It’s important to note that during the 2018-19 season, when they lost their first three fixtures, they returned to winning ways in Matchday 4. Still, we won’t include them in our soccer picks and parlays. They will still be without three of their most important players: Florian Wirtz who is still recovering from his cruciate ligament injury, Amine Adli and Karim Bellarabi.

Mainz vs Leverkusen Head-to-Head

Mainz managed to beat Leverkusen 3-2 last term at this venue, losing their away mutual encounter 1-0. Three of Mainz’s four goals have been headers, a league high. They’ve also had more headed efforts at goal than any other team. Onisiwo is the league’s joint-top scorer so far this term with three goals, alongside Sadio Mane and Jamal Musiala. All three of his strikes have come away from home. Mainz only lost twice at home last term winning 10 of 17 fixtures, while Leverkusen was the second-best road team after Bayern Munich, losing three and winning nine in 17 away games.

Mainz vs Leverkusen Betting Lines

Mainz vs Leverkusen Predictions

Strangely, the visitors enter this clash as slight favorites at +145 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds while the goal-line is set at three.

How on earth to back Leverkusen here? They are still on holiday and we simply can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Yes, they have a great attacking line, but they struggle to find the back of the net. Mainz is a force to be reckoned with on home soil and that will definitely not change this weekend. We expect them to maintain their unbeaten winning run and win at least one point from this clash. We’re going with a great value bet. We will take them with PK at even money but, for our official pick, we expect them to score at least twice on their own.
