Not too long ago, the Seattle Sounders ruled the West with a comfortable advantage. However, things have changed, and now they could lose first place if they don’t beat Minnesota United.
Minnesota has played one game less than Seattle. Beating the Sounders and winning that pending game would allow them to fight for first place. There you go, there’ll be a lot on the line in this Western Conference showdown. I know the Colorado Rapids and Sporting KC, second and third place, will be watching.

- Seattle Sounders Victories: 7 (20 goals)
- Minnesota United Victories: 1 (7 goals)
- Draws: 1
They already met twice in 2021. First, Seattle crushed Minnesota 4-0 at Lumen Field. Raul Ruidiaz was the Player of the Match after scoring twice. Joao Paulo and Fredy Montero also scored. Later, Minnesota won 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Robin Lod.
The only draw between these two was in 2019. That game was in Minnesota and ended 1-1. That means that if there’s something you can expect from this game is goals.
Why bet on the Seattle Sounders?
Being in first place should be enough to include them in your soccer picks, but there’s more. The Seattle Sounders are a well-balanced team. They’re the second top-scoring team in the conference with 35 goals. They also own the best defensive record after allowing 19 goals in 22 games.
Most recently, they lost 2-0 to the Portland Timbers. That was their first loss in their last six games in all competitions. That’s right, Seattle is not used to losing two straight games, and they aren’t planning to start now.
Head coach Brian Schmetzer and the entire staff have done a great job, and now they’re going to have even more help. Seattle recently signed Freddy Juarez as an assistant coach.
“When you mix Brian Schmetzer and the Seattle Sounders together, it’s nothing but exciting. That’s something I need, to learn from the best and be at the best club,” said Juarez during his presentation.
He’s not wrong, Seattle played four of the last MLS Cup finals, winning two of them. They’ve been very disciplined and respectful of the game. They were among the favorites to dethrone Columbus Crew prior to the start of the season.
Curiously enough, they’ve lost more games at home than on the road. They’re 5-4-3 at Lumen Field (7-2-1 on the road), 4-7-1 against the spread, and over/under. In order to finish the regular at the top, they can’t afford to lose more points at home.
Jordy Delem, Stefan Frei, and Jordan Morris are out due to injury. Their expected lineup is Stefan Cleveland; Yeimar Gomez, Shane O’Neill, Xavier Arreaga; Brad Smith; Alex Roldan, Kelym Rowe, Joao Paulo; Cristian Roldan, Raul Ruidiaz, Freddy Montero.
Why Bet on Minnesota United?
Minnesota United is still in the mix of teams with a shot at the conference first place. That’s why they’re such an interesting underdog, no matter what the scores and odds say.
They’re in fifth place with 31 points thanks to an 8-7-6 record, 24 goals for and 24 against. Most recently, they beat the Houston Dynamo 2-1 on the road. They’ve three straight games without losing, and they only lost one of their last nine games.
Minnesota hasn’t won too many games on the road, but they aren’t easy to beat. They’re 2-5-3 when playing away from home, 6-4 against the spread and 5-5 over/under.
Head coach Adrian Heath has done a great job finding new talents to fight the injury bug. Defensively, they’ve improved a lot, finishing with a clean sheet in two of their last five games. They allowed only one goal in each of the other three.
Center-back Michael Boxall has been leading that improvement. He’s highly motivated after recently signing a contract extension.
Franco Frapagne, Robin Lod, Niko Hansen, and Jan Gregus are questionable due to injury. Their expected lineup is Tyler Miller; Romain Metanire, Michael Boxall, Brent Kallman, Chase Gasper; Osvaldo Alonso, Wil Trapp, Hassani Dotson, Jacori Hayes; Adrien Hunou, Ethan Finley.
Final Analysis and Predictions
Expect goals. The Seattle Sounders were shut out only in five of their last 58 home games. Also, Minnesota United could win two straight away matches for the third time in club history. You don’t need more motivation than that. Also expect a close one, we’re talking about two teams that know each other pretty well. Also, the first game after an international break is always tricky.
