Monterrey: Elite Attack

This two-game stretch will be challenging for Monterrey. Their last match was a 1-1 draw against first-place Toluca, who are only one point ahead of them. Now they must face their bitter rivals, who sit two points behind them with a match in hand. These crucial games are four days apart.

After a 4-3 loss on opening day, Monterrey is undefeated and the offense has only gotten better. They average the most goals per game (2.2) in Liga MX. Arturo Gonzalez has been fantastic in attack for Monterrey, tied for the lead in goals+assists with nine.

Gonzalez is hardly the only contributor to the attack. Rodrigo Aguirre and Rogelio Funes Mori each have four goals. The three have combine for 12 goals, outscoring other teams on their own.

In Monterrey’s previous game, Toluca had 64 percent of the possession but was outshot 15-5. Monterrey has been fantastic out of control, having the fourth-lowest percentage of possession on average, allowing them to counter quickly.

Tigres: Strong Defense

Tigres is not one of the most attack-dominant teams in Liga MX but is deserving of placing in the top three of the table. They have won six of their eight games, with two losses.

Four of those victories have been by one goal. Credit the Tigres’ fantastic defense, which allowed the fewest goals in the league, leading to five clean sheets — the most in Liga MX.

Their offense has been serviceable with 11 goals, but they are lacking compared to the other teams at the top of the table. However, all of their scorings has come from open play, so they haven’t had the advantage of scoring off set pieces, penalties or their own goals.

Andre-Pierre Gignac and Francisco Cordova are the best offensive players for Tigres, combining for five goals and four assists. In their last game, a 2-0 win over Santos, the pair combined for the opening goal. They have been the most significant source of offensive output to complement Tigres’ outstanding defense.

Monterrey vs Tigres Prediction

Monterrey and Tigres have been two of the best teams in Liga MX. Monterrey has dominated by scoring goals off a devastating counter-attack, while Tigres has hunkered down and won close games with their defense. It is only fitting that these two rivals have different styles of play.

However, Tigres’ play style could play right into Monterrey’s hands. Monterrey wants to play out of possession and wait for an opportunity to strike on the counter.

Score Prediction: Monterrey 2, Tigres 0
