Napoli: Serie A Champions
Ahead of the final weekend of action in the 2022-23 Serie A campaign, the majority of battles are already settled. Napoli clinched their first Scudetto since 1990 weeks ago, with the top four now confirmed and just one relegation spot left to be settled. Luciano Spalletti has announced his shock decision to leave Napoli after guiding them to the title, with his team looking to sign off in style this weekend.
The former Inter and AS Roma boss had hinted on several occasions that he intended to leave despite leading the club to their first Serie A title in 33 years, triggering president Aurelio De Laurentiis to offer a contract extension that would have kept him in Naples until 2024.
After arriving in the summer of 2021, Napoli finished third place in his first season before cruising to the Serie A title this term, marking the first time the club had won the scudetto without Maradona. They also made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time, where they were beaten by Milan.
A routine win against Sampdoria might not be symbolic of Spalletti’s incredible season, but it will wrap up a fine campaign on a positive note as the club plans for the future, so we will continue to include them in our Serie A picks and parlays. Spalletti will be without key defender Kim Min-jae for this clash, as he serves a one-game ban, with Juan Jesus in line to fill in. Matteo Politano, Hirving Lozano, and Mario Rui are all sidelined and will not be risked by the hosts.
Sampdoria: Already Relegated
Despite switching Marco Giampaolo for Dejan Stankovic in mid-season, Sampdoria has failed to defy the drop and is on course for their lowest points tally in a Serie A season, having lost 24 times to date, their worst such total in a top-flight campaign. Now bound for Serie B, and with the added pain of having to swap places with recently-promoted rivals Genoa, the 1991 Serie A winners will be under new ownership as they tackle the task of bouncing back at the first attempt.
A consortium that includes Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani has completed its takeover of the team. Leeds’ majority shareholder, Radrizzani’s company Aser Group, and finance company Gestio Capital announced they had concluded a deal to save financially-stricken Sampdoria.
If you’re betting online, you should be aware that Sampdoria has nothing to play for, and their confidence level is really low. Sampdoria’s injury picture remains unchanged ahead of this tie, with Emil Audero, Andrea Conti, and Ignacio Pussetto all still out of action.
Napoli vs Sampdoria Head-to-Head
Napoli has eased off the gas slightly since confirming the title. But they are unbeaten in their last four home league games, including wins over Fiorentina and Inter. Their rate of goals scored has also decreased, with at least three goals scored just once in their last six matches across all competitions. That is stretched out even further in terms of three plus scored in total across 90 minutes, with just two of their last 10 featuring that instance.
Defensively, Napoli has conceded just two goals in their last four home matches. Sampdoria conceded 41 goals in 18 away games this season and failed to find the back of the net in the last four encounters with Napoli.
