Napoli: Out of Form

Luciano Spalletti’s side cruised into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne before Liam Henderson’s 80th-minute strike sparked a rapid Empoli comeback and believe it or not, Napoli lost 3-2. This is the second consecutive game in which Napoli fails to maintain their lead after dropping two points in a 1-1 draw against AS Roma.

Napoli finished fifth last season, one point behind Juventus and Atalanta and two points behind AC Milan. We don’t expect them to improve in terms of points but we do expect them to return to Champions League action. Mathematically, they still need three points and they have five to earn them.

In Victor Osimhen, fans at the Maradona have arguably the league’s most in-form marksman, with the Nigerian scoring 12 goals this season. We expect more from him but it’s very important to note that he was injured for a long period of time and it’s always tough to return to form in such a short period. Next season he will improve but let’s see if he stays with Napoli or leaves to the higher bidder. Given their form and morale, it’s risky to back Napoli so we will not include them in our soccer picks and parlays.

Sassuolo: Talented Squad

The 2020/21 season will be remembered fondly by all involved at Sassuolo, as they saw their side reach unprecedented heights in record-breaking campaigns. They hit 62 points, breaking their previous best total of 61 from 2016/15. In 2016 they did qualify for the Europe League though, whereas they missed out on European football due to their goal difference, Serie A’s second tiebreaker.

De Zerbi’s decision to leave Sassuolo at the end of the last season was disappointing news not only to Neroverdi supporters but also to anyone who has as much as a passing interest in Serie A. Sassuolo was playing the most entertaining football under De Zerbi and we cashed many times with them.

They also lost many of their key players but they still have a talented squad with many amazing youngsters including the likes of Gianluca Scamacca, Giacomo Raspadori, Hamed Junior Traore, Davide Frattesi, and Maxime Lopez. Their main objective this season is to rebuild the squad and finish in the top half of the table. They are sitting 10th just three points above Udinese and Torino and they need a good run in the final weeks of the season. If you’re betting online, you should know that Sassuolo has always performed well against the top sides so we expect them to maintain that trend.

Napoli vs Sassuolo Head-to-Head

Sassuolo managed to hold Napoli two a 2-2 and a 3-3 draw in their previous two mutual encounters between the two sides. They also managed to beat them back in 2020, 2-0 on the road so you can now understand why it’s difficult to back Napoli. Sassuolo is very inconsistent on the road winning just two of their last four away fixtures but they managed to beat Inter during the process. Napoli’s form is awful. They won two of their previous eight matches across all competitions, conceding at least one goal in seven of them. Their home form is worrying. They lost three of their last five games across all competitions.

Napoli vs Sassuolo Betting Lines

Napoli vs Sassuolo Predictions

The hosts enter this clash as heavy favorites being priced at -215 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds while the goal line is set at 3½.

With little motivation other than a third consecutive top-ten Serie A finish, Sassuolo is stumbling to the finish line with three losses from their last four matches. Coach Alessio Dionisi was disappointed with the 2-1 defeat to Juventus last time around and is looking to end the season on a high, all the while planning for the departure of star players. We celebrated that result because we cashed the BTTS and Over 2½ goals at -105 and we’re ready to cash again.

For Napoli, there is a small consolation available here. If they win this clash they will book their Champions League spot for the next season but their confidence is very low. We expect an entertaining game with two teams playing on the front foot, so don’t think about betting on the moneyline. Sassuolo should have enough to cover the +1½ as we don’t expect them to lose by more than one. On top of that, the goal line is too big, so we’re going with the under.

Pick: Sassuolo +1½ at -140
