New York City FC vs Colorado Rapids Game Preview, Odds, Picks & Predictions

Reigning Champions on a Roll!

Visitors Hope To Rewrite History

After a rocky start, New York City FC managed to turn things around and now sits atop the Eastern Conference. The Citizens haven’t lost in their last eight MLS games. On the other hand, the Colorado Rapids seek to be more consistent as they haven’t won two games in a row since March.

That’s why it shouldn’t be a surprise that the visitors come in as the betting online underdogs. Well, never having beaten the Citizens also has a lot to do with it.

Let’s check the latest news, stats, injury reports, and USA MLS odds for New York City FC vs Colorado Rapids. We’ve plenty of soccer predictions for you to consider.

New York City FC: Still Led by Castellanos

Last season, Valentin Castellanos finished as the league’s top scorer with 19 goals. He was crucial for New York City FC to win its first MLS Cup. This season, Castellanos isn’t planning to slow down. In fact, he’s the team’s top scorer with seven goals. That’s two less than Jeremy Ebobisse (San Jose Earthquakes) and Jesus Ferreira (FC Dallas), who lead the league’s scoring chart.

Score or not, he’s crucial for the team’s success. In fact, Castellanos scored for the last time on May 18 against DC United. Nevertheless, the Citizens have continued to win. Most recently, they defeated Minnesota United 1-0 thanks to a goal from Alexander Callens.

The non-losing streak also includes having advanced to the Quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup. They defeated another title contender in the Round of 16, the New England Revolution.

Castellanos and the rest of the offensive unit are good, but the defense also deserves a lot of credit. The Citizens allowed only one goal in their last eight games in all competitions. Curiously enough, it was against the Rochester Rhinos, a team from the MLS Next Pro (third division).

Besides being on a roll, NYCFC owns a 6-1-1 record when playing at home. That’s more than enough for them to deserve control over the soccer lines at -200.

Colorado Rapids: Winless on the Road

That’s another huge reason for the Colorado Rapids to come in as the online gambling underdogs at +560. They own a 0-1-5 record when playing on the road. Their lone draw was against the Houston Dynamo (1-1).

Most recently, they lost 3-1 to Nashville SC. Diego Rubio scored the Rapids’ lone goal. That was his seventh goal in 13 games, enough to be the team’s top scorer. He’s followed by Mark-Anthony Kaye, who has scored three goals.

Despite not having won on the road, the Rapids scored in four of those six games. Let’s not forget that we’re talking about the team that finished atop the Western Conference last season. They lost in the Conference Semifinals.

Even so, the entire squad knows they need to turn things around as soon as possible. Luckily for them, more help is on the way. Colorado recently signed Scottish winger Sam Nicholson to a two-and-a-half-year contract. He already played for the Rapids from 2018 to 2020, so he won’t need much time to adapt.

As mentioned before, New York City FC has never lost to the Colorado Rapids. Nevertheless, they haven’t met since 2019, when the Citizens went to Colorado and won 2-1. They had to come from behind but having one more player since the first half (33 minutes/red card) helped a lot.

The last time they met in New York, the Citizens won 4-0.

New York City vs Colorado Rapids Prediction

New York City FC lost head coach Ronny Deila to Standard Liege. Therefore, Nick Cushing has been named interim head coach. Having a new head coach could cause some confusion, but Cushing isn’t a stranger. He has been Deila’s assistant since January 2020. Prior to that, he coached Manchester City Women. Colorado will put up a better fight because of that change, but it won’t be enough to pull off the stunner.

That’s why we recommend you include the over in your soccer picks. The total went over in three of their previous five meetings.

Score Prediction: New York City FC 2, Colorado Rapids 1
