Top Two Teams in Eastern Conference to Collide in U.S. Open Cup Round of 8

Hudson River Derby

Regardless of the competition, a derby will always be a special match. However, Wednesday’s edition of the Hudson River Derby will be extra special. Why? Because we’re talking about the top two teams in the MLS Eastern Conference.

Whoever wins will advance to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals. It’s not a secret that winning the MLS Cup is the top priority but winning the cup would be a great consolation prize. Both sides are offering a +155 price in the sportsbook.

Let’s check the latest news, stats, injury reports, and US Open Cup odds for New York RB vs New York City FC. We’ve plenty of predictions for you to consider.

New York RB: Turning Things Around

After a very rocky start to the season, the New York Red Bulls managed to turn things around. At least enough to currently sit in second place in the MLS Eastern Conference, one point behind their neighbors.

Most recently, they defeated Toronto FC 2-0 with goals from Lewis Morgan and Luquinhas. Morgan is having a great season. He has scored seven goals, which places him as the team’s top scorer. On the other hand, Luquinhas is on fire after scoring in two of their last three matches.

Regarding the U.S. Open Cup, the Red Bulls suffered more than expected against Hartford Athletic but ended up winning 2-1. Later, they crushed DC United 3-0. They also scored three goals in the Round of 16 to defeat Charlotte FC 3-1. This will be the first time that they aren’t soccer betting favorites.

This is one of those cases in which playing at home could make a real difference. The Red Bulls haven’t lost in their last six games at Red Bull Arena in all competitions. They scored in all matches and finished with a clean sheet twice.

Caden Clark and Daniel Edelman, who were on international duty, will be available.

New York City FC Sizzling

The reigning MLS champions haven’t lost in their last 12 games in all competitions. Most recently, they couldn’t fulfill their role as betting online favorites against the Colorado Rapids. The game at Yankee Stadium finished 1-1. The Citizens won possession with 67 percent and took three more shots on target, but the Rapids’ defense managed to hold.

To get here, the Citizens only had two play two games. First, they had no trouble defeating the Rochester Rhinos 3-1 despite finishing the game with 10 players after Gabriel dos Santos got a red card. Also, keep in mind that they played with an alternative squad.

Most recently, they eliminated the New England Revolution, but it wasn’t easy. They needed overtime and ended up winning 1-0. Santiago Molina scored the winning goal four minutes into overtime. Some superstars such as Valentin Castellanos and Nicolas Acevedo played for some minutes.

Speaking of Castellanos, he’s the main reason for you to consider including the Citizens in your soccer picks. Last season, he led the MLS with 22 goals. This season, he has scored 11 goals in all competitions, including four in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The visitors (not so much) are offering a +155 price. That means you could win $155 per every $100 wager on them.

New York RB vs New York City Prediction

New York City FC is the better team, but the Citizens haven’t defeated the New York Red Bulls on the road since 2017. This season, they’ve been considerably better when playing at home, winning four more games than on the road. That’s why we expect the Citizens to put up a good fight, but not enough to win — at least not in regulation time. Therefore, our prediction is a draw in which both will score.

Score Prediction: New York RB 1, New York City 1
