Newcastle: Great Progress Under Howe
Newcastle can squeeze past Southampton and into its first cup final in more than 20 years if it keeps the same level of performance on Tuesday’s second leg. For the first leg, we predicted a Newcastle win & under 3½ goals at +125, and we will continue to include both in our soccer picks and parlays.
That success at St Mary’s was further proof of the progress Newcastle has made under Eddie Howe’s tutorship since his appointment just 14 months ago. Newcastle, who has already beaten Southampton twice this season, looks amazing this term and is fighting for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Howe has turned St James’ Park into a fortress since taking the reins, with the Magpies avoiding defeat in 14 outings at home this term, not to mention they haven’t lost in front of their own supporters since April 2022. Newcastle did not sustain any fresh injury or suspension concerns in the first leg, so Howe should only be working without the trio of Jonjo Shelvey, Emil Krafth, and Matt Targett for Tuesday’s second leg. The likes of Miguel Almiron and Joelinton have stepped up to the plate so far and will look to make their mark in this fixture.
Southampton: Struggling at the Back
Still fighting for cup glory on two fronts this season, Southampton is now aiming to become just the third team in EFL Cup history to reach the final after losing the first leg at home, with Stoke City’s winners of 1972 and Arsenal’s victors of 1987 both doing so.
Southampton has kept just one clean sheet from its last 15 in all tournaments, although that did come against Manchester City earlier in the EFL Cup. The Saints have also recorded a pair of 2-1 victories at Everton and Palace away from home in 2023.
Given what’s at stake, as well as last week’s first leg was a rather fiery encounter, the Saints are unlikely to return home with a positive result. Southampton centre-back Duje Caleta-Car saw red in the first leg, but the Croatian served his suspension in the FA Cup at the weekend and will be fine to return to the backline on Tuesday.
Before Caleta-Car’s suspension, Moussa Djenepo had to come off just before the break, and it remains to be seen if the forward can return from concussion protocols in time to make the squad. Juan Larios, Valentino Livramento, and Alex McCarthy also remain absent for the visitors. Given all these issues, if you’re betting online, you should continue to fade the Saints.

Newcastle vs Southampton Picks and Prediction
The hosts enter this clash as heavy favorites, priced at -250 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds, while the goal line is set at 2½.
Backing both teams to score would be going against the grain of recent Newcastle games, as United has kept 10 straight clean sheets against Premier League opponents, so we will continue with the same approach. With just a one-goal deficit to make up against a Newcastle side that is hardly ruthless in front of goal, Southampton should have an all-in approach, but that will not affect Newcastle’s rock-solid defense.
Newcastle United is listed at -250 in our Vegas soccer lines. This means that if you wager $100 on Newcastle United, you have a chance to win $40. Southampton is +700, offering a chance to win $700 on a $100 wager. The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives Newcastle United a 71.43% chance to win, with Southampton at 12.50%.
